Timed Toxin Maze In this potentially deadly challenge, you must navigate a rather complex maze with magical doors and hard-to-see obstacles, while a countdown timer ticks. When the time runs out, poison fills the room and you take constant damage until you reach the center. In the center, opening a chest dispels the toxin, but not the maze itself. If I were to rank Dungeoneering challenges by the combination of how dangerous they are, and how annoying, this one would take the top spot. It is dangerous because if you have trouble with the maze you can take enough damage to be killed rather quickly. And it is annoying because you are often forced to deal with at least part of the maze many times even after you have officially solved it. This is another unmistakable room; youll know what it is as soon as you see it. The room is entirely filled with a set of five concentric squares, surrounding four pillars and a chest in the center. There is a pull switch next to the door where you enter. The walls are made of stone except for glowing yellow portals in certain locations. The squares are made into a maze by the placement of urns and other obstacles between the walls. To enter the maze you need to pull the switch, which starts a countdown timer going; you must reach the center of the maze and open the chest to stop the timer. When the timer expires, the room begins to fill with a noxious gas. It does only about 50 to 100 LP of damage, but does it continuously; if you are far from the center of the maze, it is quite possible to be killed. Once you reach the center and open the chest, the poison is expelled from the room, and you do not need a cure poison as you would after being attacked by a poisonous monster. After the maze is solved, it remains in place. To get through the room from one door to another after the maze is finished, you do not need to go back to the center, but you may need to go through two or more of the portals.
First, make sure you are healed up and have a decent amount of food on you, just in case. It is possible to prepare for the maze somewhat by looking at it with a top-down view before you enter it, to try to figure out the right path. A large full-sized game window can help here. Im also told the Orb of Oculus can be handy on this challenge, though most players wont have that on them. Sponsored links help make RuneScoop possible; RuneScoop members don't see them. One tip I can give is not to try to take the shortest or easiest path to the center, because that almost certainly isnt the right one. The maze does not appear to be random; rather, it is carefully constructed so that getting to the center requires a lot of moving around and backtracking. So be prepared for that. The timer is usually not long enough to get to the center, but with practice youll be able to get at least close to the middle when it runs out, and can click the chest to remove the poison without taking too much damage. One thing some players dont realize is that if you actually do get to the middle and click the chest before the timer runs out, the chest will not only stop the clock, it will give you a small random item reward. One interesting point: it is possible to simply ignore the maze, if there is no key in the center of the roomyou can just skirt around the edges of the maze to get to the various doors. But every time you go back into the room, the toxin will start to hit you again.Be sure to check for a colored shape key on the ground in the center of the floor. They are quite common, and its easy to forget about them while focusing on the maze itself. It is a good idea to set a gatestone at the start of the maze, so you dont have to run back through it after it is completed. Or, if the room is near the starting room, just use Dungeon Home Teleport and run back. The puzzle is the same for teams, and there is no advantage to having more than one person do it. The most sensible move is to have one player tackle the maze while the others stay safely outside the room.
