Sagittare (Floors 23-29) If youre into either Astrology or Astronomy, you probably had a good idea of what Sagittare was about as soon as you heard his name. Like Sagittarius the constellation and Zodiac sign, Sagittare gets his name from sagitta, the Latin word for arrow. And like Sagittarius, Sagittare is an archer. Sagittare lives in perhaps the coolest room in Daemonheim, and has a theme-appropriate set of effects and abilities. The biggest problem with him is that, despite his name, hes not actually all that good with his bow. (Well, thats not a problem if you just want to kill him, but I think hes a bit disappointing as a boss.) Sagittare can be encountered in the Furnished theme zone, floors 23 to 29. Youll know immediately that Sagittare is the boss of your level when you unlock his door: youll see a spiral shape covering the entire room on your minimap display. This odd design is part of how this boss, who only attacks from a distance, makes life difficult for meleers who want to try to get up close and personal. Sagittare adds to this annoyance by teleporting on a regular basis, and hampering players who try to come after him. Sagittare mixes up his bow attacks with magical attacks, which apparently his leather armor doesnt interfere with much. His special attack causes arrows to rain from the sky in a two-square radius around him, after which he teleports. He can also snare players and disable their ability to run, as well as shoot arrows at all players at once. To prevent any players from beating him at his own game, he has Protection from Ranged permanently enabled. Sagittare should have been designed so that if you didnt use prayer against his ranged attack, youd be toast. Unfortunately, he has the same problem with ranging being underpowered in Daemonheim that players do. It can take a while to kill him because of his little games, but youll never really be in much danger.
Table 103 lists all of the versions of Sagittare that I have encountered personally, or that have been documented by sources I consider reliable. It shows the combat level, life points total and maximum damage of each, along with the circumstances under which the boss was encountered, and what he dropped when defeated.
Sagittare is an archer, but one that is handy with a spellbook, and he mixes up his magic and ranged attacks pretty evenly. Both of them are fairly accurate, but neither hits particularly hard, even for a high-level boss instance. As mentioned earlier, he has the ability to shoot arrows at multiple players at once. His main offensive special attack is an area effect ranged attack. Periodically, he will call out Back off!. Two or so seconds later hell shout Arrow rain! and thats what will happen: arrows will rain down from the sky in a two square radius around him. He always teleports to another part of the map immediately after doing this. The special attack can be easily avoided by, well, backing off when he tells you to do so. :) Sagittare will always do one more arrow rain attack and teleport when reduced down to one life point, forcing you to finish him off after he moves. A combat familiar can be very helpful here by saving you the hassle of running him down for the final time. Amusingly, he shouts Back off! and does the arrow rain attack even if nobody is near him (though not as often). Sagittare has quite an assortment of defensive tricks up his sleeve, though these mainly serve to slow you down rather than make him particularly tough to kill. Since melee is the way to go with this guy, several of his defences are aimed at thwarting warriors. First, the room itself is set up so you often have to run a long way to get in melee range with Sagittare. He adds to this difficulty by teleporting regularly around the spiral. He can also snare you in place, like any good mage can (but protecting against magic attacks will defeat this). Finally, he can temporarily disable your ability to run, slowing you down even more, but this only lasts a few seconds. In addition to being immune to ranged attacks, Sagittare has very high magic defence. He is not immune to poison, however. As implied earlier, Sagittare has a fatal flaw: hes an archer whos not particularly dangerous with a bow. By wearing melee armor and using Protection from Magic or Deflect Magic, you force him to try to pierce metal armor with his arrows, which isnt very effective. You also make it impossible for him to snare you, so you can get into melee range more quickly. Equip yourself with decent melee armor and a good melee weapon; most players have these bound anyway. Turn on Protection from Magic or Deflect Magic and enter his room. From here on its a game of cat and mouse, with you trying to get into melee range, and him teleporting away. Use his Back off! warning to good advantage to prevent his arrow rain attack from damaging you. Otherwise, just chase him down as he teleports around. If you have plenty of prayer points you can use Piety or Turmoil when in melee range to speed up the kill. Turn it off while on the run. I also highly recommend a magic combat familiar here (a stormbringer). Even though Sagittare is hard to damage by players who are maging, hell take a fair bit of damage from a stormbringer, which can also finish him off when he teleports with 1 LP left. Melee familiars dont help much because of all of the running and teleporting around, and ranged familiars are stopped by his protection prayer. Ranging is obviously impossible here. Maging (with Protection from / Deflect Ranged) is possible, and has the advantage of eliminating a few of his defences. The room layout wont matter, and neither will his teleporting around, because you dont need to chase him around. Run energy is also not much of an issue, nor is his ability to snare. Finally, his arrow rain attack is centered around him, not the player(s), so if you are far from him it wont hurt you. The drawback with maging Sagittare is his very high magic defence. Even using Fire Surge with a catalytic staff and wearing a tier 10 magic robe top and bottom, I found myself splashing frequently on even a runt (level 96) Sagittare. So while this method is safer and possibly less annoying than meleeing, it is often much slower. A nice tip: drop a gatestone outside the boss door. At some point during the fight, you and Sagittare will be in the middle of the room fighting it out and hell teleport to the outside part of the spiral path. Teleport to the gatestone, then re-enter the room to get back to him more quickly. (Remember to drop a new gatestone; you can also use this opportunity to grab more food if needed.) Sagittare appears to be pretty much the same with teams, and in fact may be even easier. Since there are multiple players, its not as easy for the boss to teleport to a part of the spiral where nobody is located. It is probably best for all players to melee him, though if you have a dedicated mage, they could try tossing a few spells at him just to keep things interesting. Appropriately enough, Sagittare drops ranging gear: a longbow with 100 or 125 arrows. These are always tier-matched, so if you get a corpsethorn longbow (tier 8) it will come with katagon arrows (tier 8). Any tier is possible, from 1 (tangle gum bow with novite arrows) up to 11 (the much coveted Sagittarian longbow with Sagittarian arrows). Like other bosses, Sagittare also drops parts of the mysterious chronicle journal (the Chronicles of Bilrach).
