Lexicus Runewright (Floors 20-29)

What do you get when you cross a mad scientist with a bookworm? An evil librarian! Meet Lexicus Runewright, a rather nasty magic-using boss found in rooms 20 to 29 of Daemonheim’s “Furnished” theme. This nicely-designed boss uses multiple attack styles, a punishing special attack, summons and teleports to make your life miserable. Yet, with proper preparation, he can be taken down much more easily than a lot of players realize. At least in solo games. ;)

Like many of the bosses in Dungeoneering, Lexicus Runewright—or “Lexi”, as I like to call him, since we’re such good friends and all—is described cleverly by his name. A “runewright” means someone who works with runes, as a magic user does, and his first name is derived from the Greek lexikos, from which we get the word “lexicon”, describing books and words. Accordingly, Lexi’s room is furnished like a study or library, with plenty of shelves and books. And his special attacks are consistent with this scholarly theme as well.

Lexicus Runewright appears as an old man with a gray beard, wearing iridescent multi-hued blue robes, and holding a large book of the same coloring. He primarily attacks with magic but will also melee if you get close to him. His regular attacks aren’t the real danger here, though. He summons swarms of books that come after you with multiple attack styles, and has a devastating special attack called “book barrage” that can hit over 500 LP and easily kill a player who has already been hurt. Like most mages, he is weak to ranged, and that’s what you will want to use, especially given his special ability to reflect melee damage back to a player.

Offensive Characteristics and Behavior

As a mage, Lexicus Runewright’s primary “MO” is to attack with spells. His attacks are potent, and while ranging armor certainly helps, it only puts a dent in the damage you take. Protection from Magic or Deflect Magic are definitely useful here, for as long as your prayer lasts. His melee attacks are relatively weak and easily avoided by moving out of melee range; he usually won’t follow.

When you first enter his room, Lexicus will shout “Almanac army, attack!” and summon a number of glowing, blue-colored books. These have the names “Tome of Strength”, “Tome of Magic” or “Tome of Ranging”, and flap around the room, peppering players with melee, magic or ranged attacks respectively.

Lexicus will often stop attacking briefly when the books are summoned, but will then resume. After a few seconds of attacking again, he’ll shout “Book barrage!”; you’ll see faint images of books converging on your location, flashing red in color. If you don’t run several squares away, you’ll take massive damage a few seconds later (which hits through prayer). After this, he’ll again shout “Almanac army, attack!” to summon more books and repeat the cycle.

When soloing, the books that Lexi summons are level 29 (magic and ranging) and 39 (melee). They are entirely offense-based: they have only 10 LP and low defence, so they pretty much always die after the first attack on them. However, they have a maximum damage of 74 LP, and high accuracy. They also will accumulate over time if you don’t stop to get rid of them, especially when a team is involved. In teams, the books increase in combat level and damage potential, but continue to have low defence and only 10 life points.

Defensive Characteristics and Behavior

A mage without special defences is a sitting duck, and so Lexicus has several.

First, the room he is in is not a big open square like most of the boss rooms. It has lots of nooks and crannies that he likes to hide in, especially when his summons are harrassing you. He takes advantage of this by periodically teleporting around the room, usually landing in a corner or in the center. This often forces you to go into an area where previously summoned books are waiting, if you haven’t cleared them out.

Lexi is resistant to melee attacks, and also has a special reflection ability that applies to melee damage; you’ll take about 1/3 of any damage you deal on yourself. Despite this, some players may find that meleeing is a faster way of killing him than ranging, simply because melee weapons are much stronger in Daemonheim than arrows are. His resistance to melee is not very high, and you can tank the extra reflection damage.

Finally, Lexicus Runewright generally has a large number of life points for his combat level. For example, a level 169 Lexi has 4,342 LP, where a level 162 Har’Lakk the Riftsplitter has only 3,396.

“Deathslinger” ranged combat familiars are effective here and highly recommended. They will sometimes get confused and stop attacking when he teleports around, but they also keep dealing damage on the boss when you take time out to kill books. They will also kill some of the books that are attacking you; sometimes calling them into battle can speed this up. “Bloodrager” melee familiars are also effective, but I think slightly less than the ranged ones.

Recommended Preparation and Strategies for Solo Players

This is quite obviously a boss where ranging is the order of the day. Most players don’t bind ranging armor or a bow, and this is one place where it is worth taking a few minutes to make a good bow and at least rudimentary leather armor. Alch some items (especially charms) if necessary to get the cash you need. If possible, summon a ranged combat familiar to help cut down on the amount of time needed to finish the level. An alternative is to use a beast of burden to carry extra food.

Use an altar or potion to restore your prayer, if possible: it is very useful here. And be sure you have plenty of ammo, as it will end up all over the place and stopping to pick it up is counterproductive.

When ready to fight, put on Protection from Magic or Deflect Magic, equip your bow with the attack style on “Rapid” and enter the room. Start attacking Lexi, waiting to respond to his special attacks.

As soon as you see him say “Book barrage!” move at least three or four squares in any direction to avoid massive damage. If you see “Almanac army!”, look around for his summoned books and kill them immediately—the fact that you are ranging helps speed this up.

Whenever you aren’t dodging barrages or sending crazy blue books to their final reward, pepper Lexicus himself with ranged attacks. Look for him in the corners or the very center of the room after he teleports. When you run out of prayer, start watching your health even closer, as the damge from direct attacks will add to that from specials.

If as you get near the end of the fight you find that you have lots of health and food left, consider switching to melee on the “stab” setting. This can often finish him off faster than ranging, especially if you are using Piety or Turmoil to boost damage and accuracy. Just be sure to eat regularly.

Recommended Preparation and Strategies for Teams

Lexicus is one of the bosses that is much more dangerous with teams than he is solo. He summons more books, he strikes with multiple barrages at once, and you have to be near him to see his “Book barrage!” warning, which precludes dividing up tasks in the boss room.

I recommend all players be equipped for ranging, except perhaps one player who can try meleeing him. This may be especially effective if that player brings a beast of burden with extra food. Most players should be ranging, however.

In a team, Lexicus will summon veritable swarms of books, and when this happens, all players should stop attacking him and concentrate on the books. A pile of these summons can kill a player nearly instantly.

The book barrage attack is very dangerous in teams. He will do one of these centered on each player, even if they aren’t actively attacking him. It’s quite possible to run out of your targeted area of effect and right into someone else’s, which obviously would be a Bad Thing. For this reason it is best to spread players out and not stand near each other.

Also, the most effective advance notice you get that a barrage is coming is his shouted “Book barrage!” warning, but you can only see this if you are near the boss. My first time here with a team, I thought a good idea would be to have my teammate focus on Lexi while I concentrated on killing summons. I nearly died because I stupidly assumed he wouldn’t barrage me if I wasn’t attacking him, and I couldn’t tell when a barrage was about to hit. So... don’t do that. :)

Drops

WARNING: When Lexicus is killed, all of the tomes he has summoned are supposed to automatically be dispelled. However, on occasion a bug causes these books to remain, and continue doing damage until they are killed. This can lead to a disappointing death after the boss is defeated, which still costs you XP.

As befits a mage, Lexicus Runewright drops magic hoods. As with most other boss drops these range from tier 1 (salve hood) to tier 11 (celestial hood), with the level of item depending on player characteristics and the difficulty of the boss.

Lexi also drops parts of the “mysterious chronicle” journal (the Chronicles of Bilrach), as well as a special journal under his own name.
