Icy Bones (Floors 1-11) An ugly troll with a silly name, Icy Bones is a fairly straight-forward boss encountered in the low-level Frozen floors of Daemonheim. He uses a combination of melee, ranged and magic attacks, and has a special attack that causes stalagmites to appear in patterns around the boss room. While this is a neat trick, it doesnt really impact the fight very much in most cases, and few people have trouble with this boss. Icy Bones looks like a large, white/blue troll wearing a shield. He lumbers around his room, which appears fairly ordinary in most respects. The boss will come after you with both a standard melee swipe attack and a magic attack that looks like a big snowball. He also has a ranged attack, throwing rocks. The melee attack is strongest, and it can only be partially blocked by Protection from Melee or Deflect Melee. Icy Bones special causes shimmering stalagmites to burst from the ground around him in interesting patterns. These will cause damage to players who are in the squares where they appear until they move. They also cannot be crossed by players, so this serves to keep them close to the boss (who prefers to melee). However, they rarely hit players who are near the boss, and since most players melee anyway, his special is not particularly effective.
Table 91 lists all of the instances of Icy Bones that I have fought myself, or that I have documented from reliable sources. For each I have shown its combat level, life points total and maximum damage, along with the circumstances under which it was fought, and the drop it provided.
Offensive Characteristics and Behavior Icy Bones is primarily a melee boss and prefers to attack with that style. While he also mixes in a magic and ranged attack to keep you honest, he will always close to melee range if you attempt to stand away from him (which you shouldnt do anyway). His melee attack can hit pretty hard, but you can use protection prayers or curses to at least partially block it. As mentioned earlier, his special attack is not particularly dangerous, especially to players who are meleeing him. The stalagmites spring up and disappear, only to be summoned once more a little while longer. However, if you are standing next to Icy Bones, they almost never hit you, and can be safely ignored. Icy Bones can also freeze players in place, but again, this is rarely an issue since youll usually be standing next to him anyway. Icy Bones is weak to crush attacks, and appears to be somewhat weak to ranged; he is strong to magic and slash atacks, and stab appears to fall somewhere in the middle (at least when using a spear). He doesnt really have any special defences, except for the ability to block movement. You cannot run underneath him to retrieve arrows, for example. This boss is pretty easy, so not much preparation is needed. Just make sure you have a decent amount of food and some prayer points. Go into the room, put your weapon on the crush setting, slap on Protection from Melee or Deflect Melee, and have at him. Note that even though he does appear to be somewhat weak to ranging, this is much slower than meleeing, and since youre going to be in melee range anyway, is pointless. Note that attempting to snare Icy Bones to permit easier attacks from a distance was not successful at all. If you find stalagmites underfoot then shift positions, but this rarely happens. Just stick near him and youll be fine. In a limited test, a tier 8 melee combat familiar was not particularly effective here, though it helped a bit. A tier 9 magic familiar didnt fare much better, and its snare special move was ineffective. The fight is pretty much the same with teams; in most cases, players just all rush the boss and melee him until he dies. In some teams, one or two players may prefer to hang back and range the boss. Drops Icy Bones drops leather (ranged) vambraces, from the tier 1 protoleather vambraces, up to tier 11 Sagittarian vambraces. These arent the most interesting of items, of course. Icy Bones can also leave behind part of the mysterious chronicle (Chronicles of Bilrach) after it is killed.
