Gluttonous Behemoth (Floors 1-11) One of the three bosses that can inhabit the ending room of a level 1 dungeon, the gluttonous behemoth is often the first boss that a new player will encounter when he or she starts training Dungeoneering. It is generally considered one of the easier bosses within Daemonheim, but it has a few tricks up its sleeve. If you are properly prepared, you wont have much trouble with it, but if you dont plan properly and die without finishing it on your first try, you may find yourself unable to complete the level. The gluttonous behemoth is a large creature that generally stays put in its end of the boss room throughout combat. Located next to it are one or two rather disgusting-looking bovimastyx carcasses. The name of the monster comes from its large size (behemoth) and its habit of rapidly eating from these carcasses to heal itself once it has been injured (gluttonous). Players must block the behemoth from accessing these carcasses in order to defeat the creature.
Table 89 lists all of the versions of the gluttonous behemoth that I have statistics for, generally due to encountering them personally, showing the combat level, life points total and maximum damage of each. The gluttonous behemoth will attack with all three styles: melee, ranged and magic. The magic attack is a white ball of energy, the ranged attack looks like rocks falling on you, and the melee attack is a head swipe of some sort. It doesnt seem to favor any one of these over the others unless you are out of melee range, when it will of course not melee you. However, as well see, youll generally need to be in melee range as you fight, at least most of the time. All of these attacks can hit for a fair bit of damage, but none so much that a well-equipped high level character cant handle them. None seems to be particularly more dangerous than the others. Unlike most of the other bosses, this monster doesnt have much in the way of special attacks. It does have a stomp attack that is used on players that try to hide underneath it; this is similar to the behavior of the Corporeal Beast. Under normal circumstances, though, youre going to be firmly planted between the behemoth and its food, so this issue wont come up. The gluttonous behemoth, being an introductory and fairly simple boss, also does not have much noteworthy when it comes to defences. It is fairly weak to all forms of melee attacks. It will also take a fair bit of damage from ranging, but seems to have higher resistance to magical attacks. The behemoth is immune to poison (like most bosses), and it does usually have a lot of life points. The most challenging aspect of the behemoths behavior is its gluttony, as mentioned before. There will be one bovimastyx carcass to the left of the behemoth (when facing it from the door) for solo players, and two carcasses for teams. Once the boss gets down about half-way in health, it will move towards any accessible carcass and start feeding on it, healing rapidly. This eating behavior prevents the behemoth from being killed, but it can be stopped readily enough: just position one or two players between the behemoth and the carcass(es) and it will be unable to feed. That said, its only a simple solution if you are able to stay in place from when the monster is down 50% until it is completely dead. If you leave in the middle of combateither on purpose or due to deaththe monster will start feeding immediately. By the time you return you may find it at full health, and beyond your ability to kill with the amount of resources remaining on the floor. Most well-equipped solo players wont have too much difficulty with the behemoth. However, bringing in a large amount of food is absolutely mandatory; because of the feeding behavior, this is one place you definitely do not want to die. I use a spear for meleeing and find that the stab setting works well here. One strategy to reduce damage is to use melee armor to help block melee and ranged attacks, and Protection from Magic or Deflect Magic to stop its magic attacks. I often dont do this, instead using the Turmoil curse to improve defence and speed up the kill, sometimes in combination with Soul Split for healing. Piety is also a good choice for those without the ability to use Turmoil. Maging and ranging are not recommended here. The beast appears to have pretty good defence against magic. Ranging will damage it, but this is slower than meleeing because Dungeoneering arrows are weak. Also, you will be unable to pick up your arrows without moving out of the spot where you are standing to block the behemoths access to the bovimastyx carcass. Players who are relatively new to Dungeoneering or arent sure of their ability to kill the monster can increases their chances significantly by taking extra steps to increase their healing potential. One simple idea is to bring a load of extra food in a beast of burden (one of the worldbearer familiars). Fill it with fish collected while doing the rest of the level, or catch and cook some. Another idea is to make baked potatoes with toppings, which heal more than fish, though this does take some time. A smart precaution for those who are uneasy about this boss is to make use of the Gatestone Teleport spell. Create a gatestone and bring it in with you to the boss room, position yourself between the behemoth and the carcass, and drop the stone. This allows you to quickly teleport back to the block position after you respawn if you die. If you really are having trouble you can bring with the runes for the spell so you can make another stone after you return, but this costs you four extra inventory slots that could contain food instead. With two or more players the behemoth will usually be higher level, and there will be two carcasses to defend. Otherwise, most of the solo strategies are pretty much the same. Two-player teams should take the same precautions as solo players, ensuring that they bring enough food to avoid dying, or using gatestones to return quickly before the beast can heal. Beware that in a team fight with someone who had a significantly lower combat level than me, the behemoth seemed to start focusing its attention on my weaker teammate once it was half-way dead. Make sure the lower-leveled players have lots of food. Larger teams have the luxury of there being more players than carcasses, so death is less of an issue; if one player dies, another can take his or her place in the opened blocking position. Most often, the gluttonous behemoth drops a set of melee combat boots, ranging from tier 1 (novite boots) up to tier 11 (primal boots). Some have claimed to get a lesser quality weapon from the behemoth, but I cant confirm this. After killing the gluttonous behemoth, it is possible to find part 1 of the mysterious chronicle (Chronicles of Bilrach). It will also sometimes leave behind part 1 of the behemoth notes, which describe the gluttonous behemoth and related monsters such as the bulwark beast and Stomp.
