Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Fill the Barrel

Sponsored links help make RuneScoop possible; RuneScoop members don't see them. See here for more information about ads.

This is one of the more interesting puzzles, requiring some intelligence, some timing and a choice to be made. You must push some barrels out of your way to access the center of the room, and then repair a special barrel using parts located on the floor. Then, in a scene that will bring the god Guthix to mind, you must move the repaired barrel among a set of four pipes to fill it with water, while avoiding the positions that take the water away.

General Description

The barrel puzzle room actually consists of three different areas: a main puzzle and two “subpuzzles”, if you will.

You enter the room in a small alcove where monsters may reside; kill them if necessary, and you’ll find your way blocked by a bunch of barrels. You have to slide three of them to get access to the center of the room. There, you will find more barrels, including a broken one next to a wall. A “Barrel capacity” progress bar will also appear on the screen.

To fix the broken barrel you need “broken barrel bits”, which are semi-conveniently located in another alcove on the opposite side of the room. This alcove has two entrances but both are blocked by two barrels, which you can push out of the way just like the three you did earlier. However, when you do this you may block access to a chest that can contain loot, so you have to choose carefully which side to do. Note that fixing the barrel requires having the correct Construction level.

After grabbing the “barrel bits” and checking any loot chest you can reach, you can then fix the barrel, and then the real fun begins! To the right of the barrel are four pipe spots, and to the right of them, a pressure plate. At any given time, one of these four spots is an expelling pipe; when the barrel is next to it, the barrel will fill with water. Three of the locations are devouring pipes, which will reduce the water level in the barrel. The location of the expelling pipe changes randomly every few seconds. (If this reminds you of Tears of Guthix, it did me as well.) The goal is to move the barrel to keep it next to the expelling pipe as much as possible, and get enough water in the barrel to weight down the pressure plate to open the doors.

It is possible to find resources in the room; look for trees along the walls.

Recommended Strategies for Solo Players

The first subpuzzle is simple enough; push the barrels to get into the center of the room.

To get the barrel bits, first check if there’s a chest on either side; if there is, then push the barrels on the other side to get to the back room. It may be possible for there to be chests on both sides, in which case you have to decide which you want to do! Open the chest—don’t have high expectations, I got a banana once—and then repair the barrel.

Now, the main part of the puzzle: filling the barrel. This is reminiscent of the Tears of Guthix activity (minigame), but trying to fill the barrel the same way you fill your bowl is a very frustrating affair. One reason for this is that you can only move the barrel linearly, and in some cases have to push it past two more devouring pipes to get it to the one that fills it. The barrel itself also blocks your movement in an annoying way—you cannot click on the square on the other side of the one you’re standing on to move there. Rather, you must click below the barrel, then click the other side.

After trying this a few ways, I’ve decided the best way to beat the games played by the devouring pipes is simply not to play. Rather than chasing the expelling pipe around, try this method, which may sometimes be a bit slow, but always works.

Starting on the far left, push the barrel to the right until it is under the current expelling pipe. Once that changes to a devouring pipe, if the new expelling pipe is to the right, push the barrel next to it; if the expelling pipe is to the left, push the barrel right onto the pressure plate. Continue until the barrel is on the plate; you’ll get a message saying the barrel isn’t heavy enough, which you can ignore.

Position yourself on the right side of the barrel, and keep your eye on the pipe position right next to the pressure plate. As soon as it becomes the expelling pipe, push the barrel next to it, and then move yourself to the left of the barrel. Once the expelling pipe becomes a devouring pipe, push the barrel back onto the pressure plate again. Repeat until the doors unlock—nice and easy. It can be quite a pain if you are on a laggy connection, though.

Note that the barrel does have to be completely full to finish the puzzle. However, it appears that once it is full, the devouring pipes will no longer take water from it (which helps a bit, anyway.)

Recommended Strategies for Teams

This puzzle appears to be the same for teams. Just have one player solve it while teammates do other rooms.
