Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Bovimastyxes (Hides/Leather)

In “normal” RuneScape, most of the leather used to make ranging armor comes from cows and dragons. It’s fitting, then, that the source of leather in Daemonheim is a monster generically called the bovimastyx, which combines elements of both types of creature. Described in the RuneScape knowledge base as being “cow-like”, the mastyxes actually look more like large lizards. The name itself appears to be a portmanteau of bovine (meaning “cow-like”) and uromastyx, the name of a genus of reptiles commonly called spiny-tailed lizards. The bovimastyxes’ appearance, and Jagex’s use of name prefixes like “stego-” and “tyranno-“, has led to these critters colloquially being called “dinosaurs” or just “dinos”.

Bovimastyx are one of the few categories of monsters in Daemonheim that are not aggressive. You can safely ignore them; killing them doesn’t count towards determining your XP for completing a level. If you do attack them, they fight back, but they are very weak. When killed, you get big bones as a guaranteed drop, and possibly a single hide of the appropriate type.

The proper way to dispatch the mastyxes is to hunt them. Using the Fletching skill and a set of branches, you can make a bovimastyx trap and set it on the ground near the creature. There is no need to bait these traps, which are miraculously huge given the size of the trees whose branches they are made from. :) Each trap looks like a four-sized guillotine; the mastyx—which must be naturally curious—pokes its head inside the trap to look around, the blade falls and... ouch! At least it’s over with quickly. You can then skin the carcass with a knife, usually getting 2 to 4 mastyx hides corresponding to the bovimastyx you killed.

There are ten kinds of bovimastyx, matching the ten standard resource tiers in Dungeoneering. They require Hunter levels of 1, 10, 20 and so forth up to 90, following the usual pattern of tiered skill requirements. Hunter can be boosted using weak, regular or strong survivalist’s potions.

Bovimastyx traps are somewhat odd in that they usually have two names: in your inventory they are named for the type of wood they’re made from, but when placed on the ground they are named for the matching tier level of the creature they are intended to catch. For example, the thigat is a tier 7 tree, and thigat branches are used to fletch a thigat trap; lay it on the ground and it is called a gallimastyx trap, after the tier 7 bovimastyx. (The exception to this is the utuku trap, for reasons that are unclear.)

Despite this naming convention, you do not need the matching trap to catch a bovimastyx. The higher level a trap is, the more likely it is to catch a particular mastyx, and the more quickly the creature will be attracted to it. Conversely, if you try to catch a high-level mastyx with a trap made from low-tiered wood, there is a much higher chance that the trap will be ignored, or even that the mastyx will destroy it. However, if you do manage to catch a good mastyx with a cheap trap, you still get 2 to 4 hides.

Bovimastyx hides can be used immediately for making leather armor; there is no need for tanning as is the case above ground.

As with other resources, you will most commonly find mastyxes corresponding to the associated skill levels of players. In the case of mastyxes, this seems to be a function of both your Hunter level (for catching them) and Crafting level (for using the hides). I personally have level 91 Hunter and so can catch the tyrannomastyx, but my Crafting level is only 86, which I surmise may be why I rarely see any of these tier 10 cow-lizards.

The Hunter skill table lists all of the types of mastyxes, describes what they look like, and lists the XP you get for each one caught.

Note: The gluttonous behemoth tries to feed off of the carcass of a creature also generically called a bovimastyx. This is something different entirely.
