Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

The RuneScoop Skill Optimization Guide for RuneScape - Herblore

Herblore is a well-known production skill that allows player to make potions: the RuneScape equivalent of performance-enhancing drugs. J After being neglected for many years, the skill was enhanced in late 2009 with the addition of several high-level untradeable potions, which has created a resurgence in its popularity. This is one reason why I chose it for the second installment in the RuneScoop Skill Optimization Guide.

Herblore is well-known as a skill that can be leveled very quickly: speeds in excess of 250,000 XP per hour are quite achievable even without using the new potions. However, it is also notorious for being a huge money sink, and with all of the people trying to train it right now, that problem has become even worse. Some players value training speed while others are on a budget, which is exactly where this guide comes in handy: it lets you easily see the trade-offs between high-speed, high-cost options, and more modest alternatives that cost a lot less or even make money.

There’s one big caveat I must make about the Herblore portion of the Skill Optimization Guide: the Grand Exchange is a valuable resource of pricing information for my guides, but its prices often do not reflect the actual value or availability of items that are in either high demand or high supply. My ability to show you the most cost-effective training options is entirely dependent on the quality of the data coming from the GE. And with Herblore in particular, it is very often the case that items do not buy or sell for their GE prices.

For example, as I write this, the GE price of grimy torstol is 6,840 gp and the price of clean torstol is 9,089 gp. Wow, great opportunity to make money by cleaning a high-level herb, right? Well, just try to actually get any grimy torstol at that price! Everybody has buy offers in and nobody is selling. In a similar vein, there are lots of potions that are either in such huge supply from players making them that they won’t sell, or in such enormous demand from players wanting to make extreme potions from them, that you can’t buy them.

Remember: The Grand Exchange is a guideline, not a substitute for understanding the market yourself. Be sure to verify the buyability of raw materials or saleability of finished products before making a huge investment in a particular training method.

Unfortunately, these price control issues make this guide a little less useful than it would be if prices were reliable. But hey, that’s (RuneScape) life, and certainly having a guideline is better than taking a shot in the dark!
