Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

The RuneScoop Skill Optimization Guide for RuneScape - Crafting

Crafting is one of the oldest skills in RuneScape, and one of the most eclectic as well. Over the years, Jagex has slowly but surely expanded the skill to include a very wide variety of activities. Most of these (though not all) are oriented around the production of usable items from raw materials obtained from various sources within the game, including monsters, spawns, stores and other skills. Training the Crafting skill provides not only the usual benefits of leveling up one’s character, it also gives you independence—you can make items that you need for combat and other activities you want to participate in, without needing to rely on others.

Taken as a whole, Crafting often seems somewhat like a hodge-podge of various techniques and processes. With this skill you can do everything from making armor for yourself, to creating vials for potion making, to forging jewelry and making nets to gather seaweed. The many options in this skill is one of its big advantages when it comes to training: there’s never any need to get bored. Crafting is available to free players, but they have far fewer options for training, especially at higher levels (there’s only one item that F2P players can make that requires a Crafting level higher than 56).

That said, not all of the aspects of Crafting are really suited to training. I tried to include as many categories of Crafting activities in this guide that I could—that even includes some that are really of dubious value (such as weaving). However, there are some areas of the skill that simply make no sense at all if XP is what you’re after. The most common two reasons for this are an inability to get raw materials in quantities sufficient to permit training, or suffering extreme financial losses relative to the amount of experience you get.

Here is a quick list of some specific aspects of Crafting that I excluded, and why I made that choice. In many cases the decision to exclude followed testing of the method:

  • Dyeing Capes: Very poor XP combined with expensive and/or difficult to obtain dyes.

  • Spiked Vambraces: Very low XP and the need to get large numbers of kebbit claws.

  • Broodoo Shields: Requires a lot of raw materials, and getting Broodoo masks in quantity is generally not possible.

  • Dragonstone and Onyx Jewelry: Impossible to get gems in the quantities necessary for training. Onyx jewelry is also very expensive.

  • Snelms: You can’t get the raw materials consistently. I even tested killing snails and then chiseling the shells for XP—it’s very slow and rather annoying.

  • Origami Balloons: Tested this as well, and it might be a viable option, except that getting papyrus and candles in any quantity is really difficult, and suggesting this as a training method would make it worse. (We can get beeswax from the hives in Catherby—why can’t we make candles?)

Like the other skill-specific guides here at RuneScoop, the viability of the techniques described here can vary as prices change. While price volatility is not as much of a concern here as it is for a skill like Herblore, it is still an issue. Prices are based on values obtained from the Grand Exchange, but you must remember that the Grand Exchange is a guideline, not a substitute for understanding the market yourself. Be sure to verify the buyability of raw materials or saleability of finished products before making a huge investment in a particular training method.
