I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.
One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.
If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.
Thanks for your understanding!
Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success
General Discussion
The simplest, most basic way of training the Prayer skill is just to buy bones and bury them; this can be done right in the bank or at a bank chest. Simplicity is about the only appeal here -- burying bones is slow, boring, click-intensive and generally rather expensive. That said, it is one of the few options available to F2P players who want to get prayer XP in a hurry. Bones higher than big bones are not available in F2P, and members have far superior options available, such as using a gilded altar. For this reason, I advise against directly burying these bones, and have included this activity just for the sake of completeness -- heck, it may help you appreciate that gilded altar even more!
Warning: Don't do this for long periods of time, or you risk stressing your fingers and hands, which can lead to debilitating injuries in some people.
Location and Access
Burying bones can be done at any bank. For members, the Castle Wars bank chest is probably the best option, and for non-members, the chest at the Duel Arena in Al-Kharid.
Required and Recommended Equipment
None needed.
Required and Recommended Supplies
Ourg bones, of which there are two different types. The first are ancestral ourg bones, which are obtained from zogre coffins as described during the Zogre Flesh Eaters quest. These are very rare and more expensive than the second type, so they are not recommended. The second type of ourg bone is dropped by General Graardor in Bandos area of the God Wars Dungeon. The general gets his butt kicked on a regular basis, so these bones are generally available in decent quantities. They are still very expensive, because of the large amount of Prayer XP they provide.
I can't imagine anyone directly burying these bones, unless trying to make some sort of statement -- like lighting your fireplace with a $100 bill. :)
Familiar Suggestions
Members should summon a foraging familiar to earn extra money while they work -- I prefer the magpie, given the high value of rings and gems today. There isn't a really worthwhile forager below Summoning level 47, so I wouldn't bother with a familiar at lower levels.
Technique and Tips
Take out an inventory of bones and click each one to bury it; repeat until you have the XP you need or you fall asleep from boredom. :)
Burying bones as quickly as possible requires you to develop a rhythm, so that you click at just the right time to start the next bone burying after the prior one is complete. This takes some practice, but you should eventually be able to do 28 in just under 40 seconds, yielding about 2,500 per hour.
