Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success
General Discussion
One of the newest additions to Herblore, Crafting potions provide a temporary +3 boost to the Crafting skill. They are made by combining the relatively new herb wergali with giant frog spawn in a vial of water. Crafting potions are currently worth very little, because few people need to boost their Crafting level except to do a handful of quests. If and when Jagex puts out a high-level Crafting update, that may well change.
The major complication in making Crafting potions is that giant frog spawn are untradeable; this means that if you want to make these potions, you have to catch them yourself. I describe the process of catching giant frog spawn in the Fishing section of the Skill Optimization Guide; I have also incorporated that fishing process into this description as well, since Crafting potions really end up being a combined Herblore/Fishing activity. You actually spend most of your time fishing and not making potions, because that skill takes longer than Herblore does.
Note that the figures for each level assume you do this activity for a fairly lengthy period of time, so you get the most benefit from your familiars, and don't switch too much between fishing and potion-making. As always, I assume even level advancement among skills.
Location and Access
You'll need to catch the frog spawn in one of its fishing spots, which is generally the Lumbridge Swamp Caves or Dorgesh-Kaan South Dungeon. The potions can be made anywhere.
Required and Recommended Equipment
For fishing you need a small fishing net and a covered light source (I use the Seers' headband 1 as it save an inventory slot). To fish in Dorgesh-Kaan, a Dramen staff or lunar staff is needed for the fairy rings.
Required and Recommended Supplies
No supplies are required, aside from vials of water and wergali herbs.
Familiar Suggestions
While fishing, use a fishing familiar to speed up your catch and get valuable foraged items.
If making more than a few pots, summon a foraging familiar to earn extra money for you while you work -- I prefer the magpie, given the high value of rings and gems today. There isn't a really worthwhile forager below Summoning level 47, so I wouldn't bother with a familiar below that.
Once you have the spawn, make the potions in the usual way. Take out 14 water-filled vials and 14 wergali herbs. Click one vial and then one herb (or vice-versa) and when prompted, right-click the main message area and choose "Make All". Wait for the herbs to be added to the water. Next, open the bank, take out 14 giant frog spawn, click one and then click one of your unfinished potions. Again choose "Make All" and wait. Bank the finished potions and repeat.
