Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success

General Discussion

When the Hunter skill was added to RuneScape, among the new creatures that came with it were swamp lizards, orange salamanders, red salamanders and black salamanders. When caught, these are actually used as weapons, consuming “fuel” that is made from a combination of swamp tar and various herbs. The ability to make these herb tars was added to the Herblore skill, providing a nice alternative to players looking to make something other than potions.

Herb tars are made by combining swamp tar -- not swamp paste -- with one of four herbs: guam, marrentill, tarromin or harralander. Each results in a particular “flavor” of tar that is used as fuel by one of the four lizards/salamanders. It can also be used as bait to trap them.

When first introduced, herb tars were an appealing option for many herblorists, since it had a "Make-X" option from the start, meaning it required far fewer clicks than making potions. Even now that most of Herblore has "Make-X", tars are still simpler because they are a one-step process. And depending on market prices, it can be an economical training vehicle as well, especially for harralander tar, which is in moderate demand.

Location and Access

You can make herb tars at any bank, but a one-click bank like Castle Wars is preferred.

Required and Recommended Equipment

You need a mortar and pestle.

Required and Recommended Supplies

You need just the input items shown.

Familiar Suggestions

Summon a foraging familiar to earn extra money for you while you work -- I prefer the magpie, given the high value of rings and gems today. There isn't a really worthwhile forager below Summoning level 47, so I wouldn't bother with a familiar at lower levels.

Technique and Tips

At any bank, take out a mortar and pestle and a big stack of swamp tar. Now withdraw a full inventory of clean harralanders. Click the tar and then one of the harralanders; when the message appears in the game's text box, right-click and choose "Make All". Wait about a minute, bank the harralander tar and repeat. That's it! Each load takes only about a minute.
