Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success
General Discussion
Catching trout and salmon is one of the most popular speed training options for the Fishing skill. Normally players catch and keep their trout and salmon, so they can either cook the fish for Cooking XP and then use them for healing, or sell the raw fish for money. However, there is no fly fishing spot near a bank for free players, or members too low level to get to Shilo Village. For these folks, a considerable amount of time is wasted running to and from the bank, which slows down training.
This method documents one alternative, which is to fish until your inventory is full and then drop all the fish. You lose the value of the fish, of course, but can get as much as 20% more XP per hour. Bear in mind, though, that in addition to losing the fish, this is also very click-intensive.
Let me emphasize again that there is no point doing this if you have access to Shilo Village, which most high-level players do. But I describe it also for high-level members, for the benefit of skiller pures or others who haven't done that quest.
For this method, you can fish pretty much anywhere you want. Most lower-level and free players use Barbarian Village.
Required and Recommended Equipment
You need a fly fishing pole; make sure you don't buy a regular fishing pole by mistake.
Required and Recommended Supplies
You need one feather per fish caught. You can use colored feathers from Hunter, but don't use stripey feathers -- those are for rainbow fish only.
Familiar Suggestions
The goal here is to stay in one spot and avoid banking, so one argument is to avoid using familiars at all. I do recommend skipping the lower-level familiars, but using the ibis and granite lobster. They have valuable foraging items (swordfish and sharks), they help you fish faster, they give XP and they last for a while. I've assumed here that you do save and bank their foragings (since it would be a real waste not to!)
Technique and Tips
This is the same as regular fly fishing, except that when your inventory gets full you stop fishing, right-click and drop each fish. This takes about 30 seconds, compared to 60-80 seconds to get to and from Edgeville bank.
Remember that if you log in to a reasonably full world, you can often find "fish beggars" near the fishing spots in Barbarian Village who will take a load of fish off your hands, saving you even more time.
