Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success
General Discussion
Trout and salmon are the primary fly-fishing catch, and a popular training option. Low-level players can start catching trout at level 20, with salmon mixed in at level 30. The speed of the catch is pretty quick even at low levels, and improves enough that this is one of the main "power-training" options for the Fishing skill even at very high levels.
This method describes catching and keeping all of your fish. F2P players may find that this means taking up a large chunk of their time running to the bank, especially at high levels (members can fish at Shilo, right near a bank). If you don't care about using or selling your fish, you can get more XP by drop-fishing. Another alternative for lower-level and free players is to drop the trout and keep the salmon, which retains most of the value of the fish while giving more XP.
Location and Access
The best place to fly fish is at Shilo Village, on the island of Karamja. This requires both a P2P account and the completion of the Shilo Village quest, which is pretty tough; I assume you can do it when you have skill levels of about 50. The easiest way to get to Shilo is with the Karamja gloves 3 that you get from finishing the Karamja Achievement Diary; otherwise, you can use Hajedy's cart from Brimhaven.
Lower-level and free players will probably want to fish at Barbarian Village. This spot isn't very close to Edgeville bank, but it's not far, and there aren't really any other options that are better.
Required and Recommended Equipment
You need a fly fishing pole; make sure you don't buy a regular fishing pole by mistake.
Required and Recommended Supplies
You need one feather per fish caught. You can use colored feathers from Hunter, but don't use stripey feathers -- those are for rainbow fish only.
Familiar Suggestions
At very low levels, start out with a granite crab. It doesn't do much, but will get you a few extra fish. At level 40 Summoning, switch to a bull ant, and at level 52, a spirit terrorbird. If you want to make more money (at the cost of a little XP), use a magpie at level 47 instead of a beast of burden.
At higher levels, I recommend going back to fishing-related familiars; the ibis and granite lobster increase your effective Fishing level and forage fish themselves (worth good money and a little bit of XP).
Technique and Tips
Take out a fly fishing rod and plenty of feathers, then go to the fishing spots and fish until your inventory is full. Bank and repeat; that's pretty much it.
In F2P, the biggest obstacle to speedy training is the time required to bank. If you log in to a reasonably full world, you can often find "fish beggars" near the fishing spots in Barbarian Village who will take a load of fish off your hands; you lose the fish but save a lot of time. Also, at very high levels, you may find that you catch fish so fast that you sometimes don't gain back enough run energy to bank, so you'll have to do some walking to and from the bank.
