General Discussion
Tuna and swordfish are one of the most popular fishing activities, especially on non-member servers. Unfortunately, the only place to catch them in F2P is on Karamja, which is very far from a bank.
As an alternative to catching and keeping both tuna and swordfish, this method describes keeping just the swordfish and dropping the tuna. This cuts down dramatically on banking time, and since swordfish is worth so much more than tuna, you get almost as much total value in fish while obtaining more XP per hour.
Note that there is little benefit to doing this for P2P players. Catherby is close enough to the bank that dropping provides little value, and the Fishing Guild is designed well enough that dropping is probably slower. I included P2P here anyway just for sake of comparison.
Location and Access
Members should start out in Catherby, and move to the Fishing Guild at level 63 Fishing; there are many more spots there, and they are closer to the bank. (The nominal level for the guild is 68, but you can use an admiral pie at 63.)
Free players need to fish on the docks in Karamja, as the only alternative is in the deep Wilderness.
Required and Recommended Equipment
You need a harpoon to catch tuna and swordfish. Members should use a barb-tailed harpoon, since it can be equipped, saving an inventory slot.
In F2P, for the most efficient method, you also need a staff of air or staff of water, and the Explorer's ring 3 from the Lumbridge Achievement Diary.
Note that at level 70, members who have learned Barbarian fishing can catch tuna and swordfish barehanded.
Required and Recommended Supplies
F2P players need coins for the boat to Karamja and law and water (or air) runes for teleporting.
Familiar Suggestions
At higher levels, I recommend using fishing-related familiars; the ibis and granite lobster increase your effective Fishing level and forage fish themselves (worth good money and a little bit of XP). At lower levels, use a spirit terrorbird or bull ant to reduce the amount of banking, especially in Catherby. If you want to make more money (at the cost of a little XP), use a magpie at level 47 instead of a beast of burden.
Technique and Tips
As mentioned above, there's no point doing this at all in P2P, but you can, of course. Just fish as normal, dropping the tuna you catch and banking the swordfish.
In F2P, use the same method as usual, just drop the tuna so you bank less frequently. The most efficient travel method is to equip your Explorer's ring 3 and a staff of air (or water). Put in your inventory a stack of law runes and water (or air) runes, along with the lobster pot. When you need to bank, teleport to Falador and use the bank there. Take out 30 gp. Then use the "cabbage port" teleport on your ring to get near Port Sarim, run south and use the boat to get back to Karamja.
