Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success
General Discussion
Sardines and herring are beginner-level fish that can be caught at level 5 and level 10, respectively. They are fished at sea fishing spots using a fishing rod and regular fishing bait.
Like shrimp and anchovies, these are obviously only good training at low levels, but for completeness I have documented them at all levels.
Location and Access
The best place to catch these fish is behind the bank in Draynor Village, for both F2P and P2P. This spot is close to the bank and easy to get to for all players.
Required and Recommended Equipment
You only need a small fishing net.
Required and Recommended Supplies
You need regular fishing bait -- one per fish. This can be purchased very inexpensively at fishing shops or from other players on the Grand Exchange.
Familiar Suggestions
At very low levels, start out with a granite crab. It doesn't do much, but will get you a few extra fish. At level 40 Summoning, switch to a bull ant, and at level 52, a spirit terrorbird. If you want to make more money (at the cost of a little XP), use a magpie at level 47 instead of a beast of burden.
At higher levels, I recommend going back to fishing-related familiars; the ibis and granite lobster increase your effective Fishing level and forage fish themselves (worth good money and a little bit of XP).
Technique and Tips
Take out a fishing rod and plenty of bait, then go to the fishing spots and fish until your inventory is full. Bank and repeat; that's pretty much it.
Note that there is a convenient Summoning obelisk just southeast of the fishing spots.
