Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success
General Discussion
Lobster is a staple of the Fishing skill. Because of the high value of lobster, many players will start fishing for it as soon as they can, even though it is rather slow at first. By level 60 or so you can catch lobster at a pretty good pace, and many players continue to fish for it even at very high levels, especially on F2P.
Location and Access
Members should start out in Catherby, and move to the Fishing Guild at level 63 Fishing; there are many more spots there, and they are closer to the bank. (The nominal level for the guild is 68, but you can use an admiral pie at 63.)
Free players need to fish on the docks in Karamja, as the only alternative is in the deep Wilderness.
Required and Recommended Equipment
You need a lobster cage, and that's pretty much it for members. In F2P, for the most efficient method, you also need a staff of air or staff of water, and the Explorer's ring 3 from the Lumbridge Achievement Diary.
Required and Recommended Supplies
F2P players need coins for the boat to Karamja and law and water (or air) runes for teleporting.
Familiar Suggestions
At higher levels, I recommend using fishing-related familiars; the ibis and granite lobster increase your effective Fishing level and forage fish themselves (worth good money and a little bit of XP). At lower levels, use a spirit terrorbird or bull ant to reduce the amount of banking, especially in Catherby. If you want to make more money (at the cost of a little XP), use a magpie at level 47 instead of a beast of burden.
Technique and Tips
In P2P, there's not much technique involved. Just go to Catherby at lower levels, or the Fishing Guild at higher levels. Summon a familiar, fish and bank.
In F2P you need to deal with the problem of there being no bank near the fishing spots on Karamja. The most efficient travel method is to equip your Explorer's ring 3 and a staff of air (or water). Put in your inventory a stack of law runes and water (or air) runes, along with the lobster pot. When you need to bank, teleport to Falador and use the bank there. Take out 30 gp. Then use the "cabbage port" teleport on your ring to get near Port Sarim, run south and use the boat to get back to Karamja.
Note that on P2P, it is possible to start fishing Lobster at level 35 using admiral pies, or level 37 using fish pies or fishing potions. I recommend at least level 37 with admiral pies or level 39 with fish pies / potions, because
..if you just barely boost up to 40, you'll spend most of your time eating or drinking and will waste a lot of money.
