Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success

General Discussion

Barbarian heavy rod fishing allows you to catch special fish, once you have been appropriately trained by Otto Godblessed. These "leaping" fish -- leaping trout, salmon and sturgeon -- are not cooked and eaten like most of the other denizens of the sea. Rather, they are cut open to extract roe (from trout or salmon) or caviar (from sturgeon), which can be eaten, but are more properly used to make special barbarian potions as part of Herblore.

The main reason to catch these fish is for the XP they provide. In addition to being one of the fastest ways of training the Fishing skill, catching these fish also gives you small amounts of Agility and Strength experience, and you get Cooking XP from cutting the fish open.

There are several approaches you can take with these fish, depending on your priorities and how you like to play. The traditional method is to cut the fish open, which gives you fish offcuts, roe and caviar to use as bait, so you can continue fishing for a long time. But doing this wastes the caviar from leaping sturgeon, which can be sold for decent money, or used to train the Herblore skill. Thus, this method reuses only the (cheap) roe as bait, keeping the caviar for resale or use in potions.

If you want the very fastest speed possible, you can drop fish. This gives you the most XP, but you have to drop each fish (which is tedious), and you also have to bring with lots of extra fishing bait since you aren't getting more from cutting the fish you catch.

Location and Access

Barbarian heavy rod fishing is done at the special fishing spots at Otto's Grotto. Get there easily by using a games necklace to teleport to Barbarian Outpost and running south for a few clicks.

Required and Recommended Equipment

You need a special barbarian fishing rod, which you can conveniently obtain whenever you need it by searching Otto's bed -- don't bother even banking it. Also bring a knife to cut the fish.

Required and Recommended Supplies

You only need to start with 25 feathers, fishing bait or fish offcuts; after that, the offcuts and roe you get from the fish will keep you going as long as you want.

Familiar Suggestions

I recommend using fishing-related familiars; they increase your effective Fishing level and forage fish themselves (worth good money and a little bit of XP).

Technique and Tips

Catch fish until your inventory is full, then cut open the leaping trout and salmon. Do not cut the sturgeon (or it will create caviar that will be used as bait). The game will use offcuts first and roe second, so you may need to drop offcuts sometimes to prevent your inventory from getting too full. Keep fishing, and your inventory will eventually get nearly full of sturgeon. Now cut all the sturgeon open; you'll get one caviar per fish (99% of the time) and about 20 to 25 fish offcuts. Use your games necklace to teleport to Barbarian Outpost, and run into the deposit box in the lobby of Barbarian Assault -- deposit the caviar, and use the offcuts to do your next load of fish.
