Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success

General Discussion

Barbarian heavy rod fishing allows you to catch special fish, once you have been appropriately trained by Otto Godblessed. These "leaping" fish -- leaping trout, salmon and sturgeon -- are not cooked and eaten like most of the other denizens of the sea. Rather, they are cut open to extract roe (from trout or salmon) or caviar (from sturgeon), which can be eaten, but are more properly used to make special barbarian potions as part of Herblore.

The main reason to catch these fish is for the XP they provide. In addition to being one of the fastest ways of training the Fishing skill, catching these fish also gives you small amounts of Agility and Strength experience, and you get Cooking XP if you cut the fish open.

There are several approaches you can take with these fish, depending on your priorities and how you like to play. The traditional method is to cut the fish open, which gives you fish offcuts, roe and caviar to use as bait, so you can continue fishing for a long time. Since caviar has some value (unlike roe), an alternative is to cut salmon and trout and use roe as bait, but keep the caviar. This is a little slower, but you can sell the caviar, or use it to train the (very expensive) Herblore skill.

But if you want the very most Fishing XP, the method described here is optimal: drop-fishing. This is rather click-intensive compared to other methods, though, and since you aren't getting more bait from cutting fish, you need to bring with lots of extra fishing bait since you aren't getting more from cutting the fish you catch.

Location and Access

Barbarian heavy rod fishing is done at the special fishing spots at Otto's Grotto. Get there easily by using a games necklace to teleport to Barbarian Outpost and running south for a few clicks.

Required and Recommended Equipment

You need a special barbarian fishing rod, which you can conveniently obtain whenever you need it by searching Otto's bed -- don't bother even banking it. You don't need a knife here since you are dropping the fish.

Required and Recommended Supplies

Since you aren't cutting the fish, you need one fishing bait per fish you catch, just like ordinary bait fishing.

Familiar Suggestions

I recommend using fishing-related familiars; they increase your effective Fishing level and forage fish themselves (worth good money and a little bit of XP).

Technique and Tips

This is straight-forward drop fishing: catch a full inventory of fish, drop them and repeat.
