Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success

General Discussion

For most players, lava eel is a fish they catch and cook for the first time during the Heroes Quest. And for most players, that is the last time they fish for lava eel as well. You can continue to fish for them, though, using the same technique used in the quest: an oily fishing rod and fishing bait. That said, there's not generally much point in doing so -- the eels are untradeable, only heal 110 LP when cooked, and don't provide very good XP either.

Since lava eels heal the same amount as rainbow fish and give almost the same XP when cooked, I have assigned them a value equal to that of raw rainbow fish.

Location and Access

You can only catch lava eel by fishing in the lava in Taverley Dungeon (or the Wilderness). An Agility level of 70 is extremely useful here -- it allows you to get to the fishing spot from the entrance of Taverley dungeon very quickly; otherwise you are in for a long run/walk. (This is also why the quantities caught go up so dramatically between levels 60 and 70).

Start by banking at Falador east bank, taking out your oily fishing rod, bait and a stack of Falador teleport tablets. If you don't have 70 Agility, take with your brass key or keyring as well. Run southwest, hop the broken wall, and head northwest to the entrance to the dungeon. Assuming you have 70 Agility, take the pipe obstacle, then just run south to the lava. If you don't have 70 Agility, you must go north, through the gate, east past the ghosts, south through the magic axes, continue through the chaos dwarves and lesser demons, and open the gate with your key. Put on Protection from Magic and run through the blue dragons, then head south to the lava.

Required and Recommended Equipment

You need an oily fishing rod, and possibly a key as well if you can't use the pipe obstacle. If you don’t have an oily fishing rod any more you can make one from a regular fishing rod as follows. Get a sample bottle and a mortar and pestle. With the bottle in your inventory, get some raw snail meat and use the mortar and pestle on it; some snail slime will go into the sample bottle. Use the bottle on your fishing rod.

Since you need to go past dragons (assuming you are using the short-cut), taking an anti-dragon shield wouldn't be a bad idea!

Required and Recommended Supplies

You need one fishing bait per fish. This can be obtained cheaply from other players or fishing shops.

Familiar Suggestions

Interestingly, there are no well-suited familiars for this at all. This is the one place where fishing familiars like the granite lobster don't work -- presumably because you are fishing in lava instead of water -- and since the eels are untradeable, a beast of burden won't carry them. So, just use a foraging familiar like a magpie.

Technique and Tips

Get to the fishing spot, fish until your inventory is full, and then crack a Falador teletab to bank; repeat.
