Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success

General Discussion

As I perused the list of RuneScape fish to make this guide, I encountered karambwan, and wondered why I never hear anyone talk about fishing for them. Now I know why. :)

Simply put: it's not worth it. Karambwan require an annoying two-step process to catch, with lots of mouse clicks for each attempt to catch one. The number you can get per hour is quite low, the XP is average, and the fish themselves are nothing special. (And to add insult to injury, raw karambwan are price-locked on the GE.) So there's not much point in bothering, but since I did the research anyway, I figured I might as well write it up...

Karambwan heals 18, putting it right between monkfish and shark; raw karambwan gives slightly less Cooking XP than either of those fish. Since the GE currently has unrealistic values for karambwan, I have computed its value as 60% of the value of monkfish plus 40% of the value of shark (roughly an average of the two, but weighted towards monkfish).

Location and Access

Catching karambwan requires you to first catch karambwanji, little fish caught with a small fishing net in a lake on Karamja. The best way to get there is to use the fairy rings, code "CKR", and then just click the water north of where you land.

The karambwan themselves are found along the north shore of Karamja; get there fast using fairy ring code "DKP".

Required and Recommended Equipment

You need a small fishing net to catch karambwanji, and a karambwan vessel to snag the little green octopi themselves. The vessel can be bought from the fisherman in Tai Bwo Wannai after you've done the necessary quest of the same name.

Required and Recommended Supplies

No supplies required.

Familiar Suggestions

A beast of burden would be the best choice here, but unfortunately, karambwanji are untradeable, so a beast of burden is useless.

Thus, might as well use fishing-related familiars: the ibis and granite lobster increase your effective Fishing level and forage fish themselves (worth good money and a little bit of XP).

Technique and Tips

A bit of technique is needed to do these efficiently (though it's still pretty slow). The process should be broken into two steps: collecting bait and then using it.

First, equip a lunar or dramen staff, charged amulet of glory and ring of slaying. Take out a small fishing net. Rub the ring and teleport to Rellekka, then use the fairy ring just to the west. Go to Zanaris, then "CKR". Click on the lake just north of you to run there. Fish until your inventory is full. You'll catch mostly karambwanji, but there will be some shrimps in there too (you get fewer at higher levels). Drop all the shrimps and one karambwanji, then fish again until your inventory is full. Drop your fishing net and pick up the last karambwanji; you should now have 28. Rub your amulet, bank in Edgeville and repeat -- on the second and subsequent trips you can pick up the net you dropped the previous time.

Once you have a bunch of sets of 28 karambwanji, proceed to step two. Take out your karambwan vessel and 27 bait fish; use one on the vessel to load it, then take out another karambwanji. Teleport to Rellekka as before, but this time go to "DKP"; the karambwan spots are just north of you.

Drop one karambwanji temporarily and click the fishing spot. After a couple of seconds you'll either catch a karambwan or get a message that your bait was taken. While you are waiting to see if you caught a karambwan; left-click the next karambwanji; as soon as a message appears, click the vessel to load it, then click the fishing spot again. This way you can keep fishing nearly continuously.
