Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Analysis, Discussion and Tips for Success

General Discussion

As part of the quest Fremennik Isles, Jagex introduced a new, parallel form of leatherwork to the Crafting skill. Yaks are cow-like creatures that drop yak-hide, which can be cured into cured yak-hide and used to make two types of yak-hide armor: bodies and legs (chaps). These are made in very much the same way as regular leather armor, the only real difference being the raw material and the items made (and getting five items per spool of thread with yak-hide instead of four with leather, for reasons that are a mystery to me...)

Weirdly, Jagex made yak-hide legs and bodies give the same amount of XP, despite the fact that bodies require twice as many hides. For this reason, most players who use yak-hide for training make legs.

Note that in the game itself, both the legs and bodies are just called "Yak-hide armour".

Location and Access

You can craft yak-hide armor at any bank, but a one-click bank is preferred. Castle Wars is my favorite.

Required and Recommended Equipment

A needle.

Required and Recommended Supplies

You need one piece of cured yak-hide per item made, and roughly one spool of thread for every five items. (Thread is cheap, so I recommend just buying lots of it so you don't worry about running out.)

Cured yak-hide can be purchased, or you can get it cured yourself at the special tanner on the island of Neitiznot. Beware that getting large amounts of yak-hide can be difficult at times, because these items are used as the secondary ingredient for the popular pack yak familiar.

Familiar Suggestions

Summon a foraging familiar to earn extra money for you while you work -- I prefer the magpie, given the high value of rings and gems today. There isn't a really worthwhile forager below Summoning level 47, so I wouldn't bother with a familiar at lower levels.

Technique and Tips

With a needle and thread in your inventory, withdraw a full load of cured yak-hide. Click the needle and then one of the pieces of yak-hide; when the dialog box comes up, right-click the "Yak hide leg armour" entry and choose "Make X". Quickly enter any number over 26 (I usually just reach for the number keys and enter "33" or "44" or something like that) and wait for the items to be made. When they are done, bank them and repeat the procedure.
