The Barrows is one of the most popular activities in RuneScape, since it allows players to go after high-level rewards, gain XP, and have fun all at the same time. There are many ways to kill the brothers and get to the chest in the center of the tunnels, and most players have their own unique sets of equipment and techniques that they employ to accomplish the task.

One key decision that you must make at The Barrows is kill count: how many of the monsters other than the brothers you want to kill. This number doesn’t affect your chances of getting a Barrows armor item or weapon, but it does have a significant impact on the other items you get from the chest: gold, runes and/or bolt racks.

There has been little agreement among players over the years about what the best kill count was to get. Most players thought it was a simple trade-off: higher kill count gave more runes and other items, but slowed you down so you did fewer chests per hour. In the first controlled test of its kind, I tested 96 runs to the Barrows chest and discovered that the ideal kill count is often lower than players expect it to be. This is described in detail in Report #6 of The RuneScoop Laboratory.

The best kill count to aim for is not a static figure; it depends on the relative values of the various items in the chest, as well as on how quickly the player is able to kill the brothers, kill the monsters, and deal with overhead activities. Using the knowledge I gained in my lengthy test, I have created this guide, which allows you to input key parameters for how you do the Barrows, and see a customized table showing how kill count should influence the total value you get at the activity.
