Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Overview and Goals of the Beastopedia

Much—if not most—of RuneScape is oriented around combat, and killing monsters is a big part of that. Killing the various beasts that wander the land of Gielinor is a primary way that players accomplish many of their goals, including all of the following:

  • Raising combat-related skills: Attack, Defence, Strength, Constitution, Ranged and Magic.

  • Making money.

  • Obtaining resources needed to work on non-combat skills.

  • Getting rare and exotic armor, weapons and other items.

  • Completing quests.

  • Having fun and socializing with friends.

Since players spend so much time fighting monsters, they naturally want to know as much about them as possible. Unfortunately, Jagex provides precious little information about the monsters that inhabit its game. For this reason, many players turn to third-party fan sites, most of which have databases of monsters—sometimes called bestiaries—that provide information about monsters to help players who are unfamiliar with them.

Most bestiaries include basic data about monsters, such as their level, life points and location, a list of possible drops you can get from each, and a few hints about how to go about fighting them. This is obviously important information that fills the gap left by Jagex, and I’ve always been grateful to the fan sites that put them together. But at the same time, I’ve also found that most of these databases are rather spartan and limited in terms of the information they provide.

As a player, I always wished there were a more comprehensive resource about RuneScape monsters, and that’s what I set out to accomplish in creating the Beastopedia. My overall objective was to create a “one stop shop” for finding out everything you need to know about fighting most of the monsters in RuneScape. My focus in doing this was to include not just the well-known stats of monsters, but also actual empirical data: numbers obtained through real combat testing.

My goals for the Beastopedia were as follows:

  • Provide more complete statistics and specifications for monsters, including information usually missing from bestiaries such as maximum hit by attack type.

  • Include Slayer information, such as which Slayer masters assign particular Slayer monsters and in what numbers.

  • Show accurate drop lists for monsters, avoiding problems caused by unconfirmed reports of potentially incorrect drops.

  • Tell players what is involved in fighting monsters, and what equipment and supplies they need to do so.

  • Indicate roughly how many of each monster can be killed in a given period of time (to assist in planning Slayer assignments and moneymaking efforts).

  • Illustrate the difference between possible drops and likely drops by showing drop logs from actual combat.

  • Give players some practical information on which monsters are the best for obtaining essential resources such as runes, herbs and charms.

To do all this, I set out to learn all I could about the monsters of RuneScape, one at a time. I concentrated on “regular” monsters—as opposed to special monsters encountered during quests—and spent hundreds of hours of time in combat. For each monster, I kept track of the equipment and supplies I used, and also recorded all of the drops I received. I also counted how many monsters I killed per hour, and put all of this data into a large database. I then wrote computer code to analyze this information, produce a page of data for each monster, and also generate summary tables that let you compare monsters and see their strengths and weaknesses.

I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor. J
