Method Description, Instructions and Tips for Success

General Description

Cave goblin wire is in demand by high level crafters, since adding a wire to an empty light orb yields a fast 104 Crafting XP. It is easily obtained by thieving it from the machine in the southern part of Dorgesh-Kaan, often known as the "crafting area" because of its sand pit, glass furnace and the wire machine itself. A spirit terrorbird is used for extra capacity due to the distance from the bank; use a bull ant instead if your Summoning level is 40 to 51.

I don't recommend a war tortoise because it only helps a little compared to the terrorbird and the cost of war tortoise pouches has become very high. If you have level 96 Summoning, though, a pack yak pouch is worthwhile.

Note that the very high level and extremely high level methods are estimated by extrapolating from test figures obtained for the high level variation, since my Thieving level is well below 90.

At very high levels, the Ardougne Cloak 3 is supposed to improve your chances of success in Thieving. I haven't been able to verify this with my tests -- the random number generator seems to dwarf the effect -- but there's no harm in wearing it.

Specific Method Details

Log in to a full world. Get to Dorgesh-Kaan using a teleportation sphere or via the goblin caves accessed through the basement of Lumbridge Castle (remember your light source!). At the bank equip a regen bracelet and Ardougne Cloak 3, and take out a spirit terrorbird pouch and cheap healing -- I use jugs of wine, since they heal 11 and are very inexpensive; take 6 or 7 of them per trip at this level (the yak lets you stay longer, so you need more healing). Wine does reduce your combat stats, but that doesn't matter here; just remember to restore the stats if you do combat after using them.

Run south from the bank a long way, past the marketplace until you get to a set of stairs on the southern wall of the large main chamber. Go up the stairs, then immediately down the ones just to the south of you. The wiremaking machine is just to your southeast.

Click the rotating wire spool to take some wire; if you fail you are hit for 5 damage and briefly stunned. Drink wine when stunned or while waiting for a respawn, and put wires into the pack yak as soon as you have at least 15. Continue until you have 15 more and store those in the yak, then keep going until your inventory is full, dropping unused wine if necessary. Return to the bank and repeat the process.
