General Description

This method combines smelting steel bars and making cannonballs into one activity, taking advantage of the extra inventory space when smelting steel to hold the ammo mould. This method can be either a better or worse moneymaker than just making bars, depending on cannonball prices.

You should complete at least the easy tasks of the Varrock Achievement Diary to get Varrock armour (any level), which gives you access to the furnace in Edgeville, which is the best in the game now that Jagex removed its annoying door. It is right next to the bank, and when wearing the armour you have about a 10% chance of smelting two bars at once. This doesn't make a huge difference with steel bars but every bit helps.

A beast of burden provides no advantages with this method, so at mid levels and above I recommend a foraging familiar such as a magpie, which will provide you a nice bonus in foraged items while you work.

Specific Method Details

Get to Edgeville and put on your Varrock armour, then take out your ammo mould and magpie pouch.

Summon a magpie, then take out 9 iron ore and coal for the rest of your inventory. Click in the furnace room, then click the furnace, right click the steel bar and select "Make 10". Once you have a steel bar made left click to highlight it; when all the bars are done click the furnace and choose "Make All" to make the cannonballs.

When done, bank and repeat. On average, you'll get the message saying you smelted two bars at once about once per load.
