Method Description, Instructions and Tips for Success
General Description
Cosmic runes are used for a variety of purposes, including enchanting jewellery and crossbow bolts, and are always in high demand. Each cosmic rune is worth only about the same as one pure essence, so making a single cosmic from one ess is not a moneymaker. At level 59 Runecrafting, though, you can make double cosmics, and that changes the money situation quite a bit!
And the November 2009 Runecrafting update means you now get more runes per essence between multiple rune milestones, which greatly increases cosmic rune profitability between levels 27 and 59. This makes cosmic crafting profitable at mid levels.
There are many different approaches for runecrafting cosmic runes. Some players just walk back and forth between the bank and altar, but that's very slow. Using the Abyss is always an option, but some players hate going into the Wilderness. An alternative is a method I developed that makes use of the fairy rings in conjunction with the new ring of Slaying that you can unlock using Slayer points. The main advantage of this technique is that you don't have to worry about revenant attack or getting skulled. The main benefit of the abyss method, however, is that you can craft more runes per hour and it also makes it easy to repair your Runecrafting pouches.
You should not need to use energy potions, as run energy will restore rapidly at high levels due to the June 2009 energy update.
Note that if your Agility level is marginal, you may be better off taking the single lower-level shortcut instead of the two higher-level ones.
Specific Method Details
Start at any bank, equipping your weight-reducing gear, a ring of slaying, charged amulet of glory, cosmic tiara and lunar or dramen staff. Take out an abyssal lurker pouch and summon it, and also take out your four Runecrafting pouches. Take out pure essence and fill the giant pouch and abyssal lurker, then take out more to fill the other pouches, and finally, fill your inventory again.
Right-click the ring, operate it and teleport to the Rellekka slayer cave; the fairy ring is just to your west. Click it to go to Zanaris and run south towards the altar. When you see the agility shortcut (jutting wall) just to your south, go through it, then go through the second one. Continue south to the ruins and enter, then run the last bit of the way to the altar. Craft the runes in your inventory, then take the 7 from your familiar and unload the giant pouch and craft those. Finally, unload your other three pouches and craft those essences. Use your amulet of glory to teleport to Edgeville, and bank there. Then repeat as needed.
A few notes on the process. First, make sure you remember to replace your amulet of glory every four trips. Second, you will need to have lots of amulets of glory to make this work, and will have to take time to recharge them once in a while at the Heroes' Guild. If you don't want to do this, you could use rings of duelling instead of the glories, but this costs you an inventory slot. At very high levels, the most efficient method is to own lots of amulets (100 or more) and when most are discharged, summon a geyser titan familiar and use it to recharge all of them in just a few seconds. Once in a while you will also need to make a trip to the Abyss to repair your pouches. If you want to play it safe you can do this while leaving the pouches in your bank (oddly enough). If you don't mind a small risk, then just do a run using the abyss method, stopping to repair your pouches while in the inner circle and then continuing through to the rift.
