Cosmic runes are used for a variety of purposes, including enchanting jewellery and crossbow bolts, and are always in high demand. Each cosmic rune is worth only about the same as one pure essence, so making a single cosmic from one ess is not a moneymaker. At level 59 Runecrafting, though, you can make double cosmics, and that changes the money situation quite a bit!
And the November 2009 Runecrafting update means you now get more runes per essence between multiple rune milestones, which greatly increases cosmic rune profitability between levels 27 and 59. This makes cosmic crafting profitable at mid levels.
There are many different approaches for runecrafting cosmic runes. Some players just walk back and forth between the bank and altar, but that's very slow. Using the Abyss is always an option, but some players hate going into the Wilderness. An alternative is a method I developed that makes use of the fairy rings, in conjunction with the new ring of Slaying that you can unlock using Slayer points. The main advantage of this technique is that you don't have to worry about revenant attack or getting skulled. The main benefit of the abyss method, however, is that you can craft more runes per hour. It also makes it easy to repair your Runecrafting pouches.
Bear in mind that any time you travel through the Wilderness there is the risk of revenant attack, but the distance covered in getting to the Abyss is small, and you only have to go up to Wilderness level 5, so it's rare to encounter a revenant of the right level to attack you. If you do come under attack, try to run south back to "civilization" or teleport using your amulet. If you are about to die, immediately drop your pouches -- you can get them back if you return quickly after you respawn, but if you die with them they are lost. I formerly used a forinthry brace to provide some protection when using the Abyss. However, I have discontinued the practice, since the chances of actually needing it are small, and the cost of the braces cuts into your profits significantly. |
