General Description

Pure essence is the raw material for high-level Runecrafting and is always in demand. It is quick to mine and the only resource you can mine without having to move from rock to rock.

Pure essence mining seems to occur at a constant speed regardless of Mining level, so money-making differences boil down to issues like Summoning familiars and being able to access the mine from the Magic Guild instead of Varrock (which is closer to the bank.) At level 93 Summoning you gain access to the very useful abyssal titan familiar.

There are pros and cons to using pouches when mining essence. To some extent, the tradeoff depends on level, so see the individual money-making pages for more information.

Note that a dragon pickaxe will provide more yield than a rune pickaxe for those with Mining levels above 60. Due to its very high cost, however, I have decided not to include it in the Moneymaking Guide at this time.

Specific Method Details

At this level you can use a rune pickaxe, more weight-reducing gear, and you are almost high level enough to use an abyssal parasite familiar which can hold 7 pure essence (level 54). You can also use the small, medium and large Runecrafting pouches. I performed many tests comparing the speed in mining pure essence with various familiars and both with and without pouches. And the conclusion I came to is that using pouches is basically a draw. You can use them you can get more essence per hour, but not as much more as you might think, because of the overhead of loading and unloading them. Also, you have to take time at least once an hour to repair them. If you view repairing the pouches as an opportunity to do some Runecrafting at the same time then this is no big deal, but if you see it as a distraction, it's not worth the bother. I choose to employ a magpie familiar instead, since the goal here is making money and the magpie provides a high value of foraged items.
