Method Description, Instructions and Tips for Success
General Description
Chinchompas are a useful area attack ranged weapon that are very popular among players training combat. Hunting them provides decent to very good money and plenty of XP as well, with the nice benefit of not requiring banking nor much running around. The process is the same at high and very high levels, though you'll catch more at level 90 Hunter than at level 70.
Specific Method Details
Wear a full set of larupia armor when hunting, as this increases your chances of success. You should also wield a lunar staff or dramen staff. That's pretty much all you need.
Take out from the bank one or more arctic bear pouches (it provides a +7 Hunter bonus for faster catching) and 6 to 8 box traps. Get to Zanaris by using a ring of slaying to Rellekka and taking the fairy ring there, or teleporting to Edgeville, running northeast over the bridge and south to the fairy ring. Once in Zanaris, and go to code "A K Q". Just to the south of the fairy ring you'll find some gray chinchompas bounding around; summon your familiar, set up four traps in this area and start hunting. If there is already someone there, try hopping and you should be able to find a free world.
Since chinchompas stack, you can stay in the area hunting for a very long time, which is part of the appeal of this method. Note that the extra box traps are in case you lose some, since you don't need inventory space anyway. If you need to recharge Summoning points to bring out another arctic bear, there's even an obelisk conveniently located just north of the fairy ring.
Count on about 230 chinchompas per hour at this level. Interestingly, the number of regular chinchompas you can catch per hour is actually less than the number of carnivorous chinchompas you can get. This is because the gray chinchompas are more spread out, while the red ones are more concentrated in a particular area. The exception to this is when the red chinchompas are crowded.
