Method Description, Instructions and Tips for Success

General Description

In September 2009, Jagex added a new feature to RuneScape: the Living Rock Caverns. This new high-level area provides access to high-level Fishing, Mining and combat content, including two new types of fish: cavefish and rocktail.

Cavefish require level 85 Fishing, and are caught using regular fishing rods and bait. When cooked, these fish heal 20 HP, like sharks, and they also provide a +2 bonus to a random combat stat. Cavefish fishing is slower than fishing for sharks, but they provide much higher XP: 300 each compared to only 110 for shark. This makes them a great choice for players who want to both make money and raise their Fishing skill.

The Living Rock Caverns are a dangerous place, patrolled by level 120 and level 140 rock guardians. These monsters are aggressive, but only if you get within one square of them; thus, they can usually be avoided, but you must be prepared to deal with them. For this reason, unlike normal fishing activities, you need a weapon and good combat gear for the occasional battle. There is a distinct advantage to being on a full world in this dungeon, because the more people there are, the less the chance of you personally being attacked. I recommend logging in to World 2, especially if you plan to do this for a while.

Specific Method Details

Log on to World 2 and bank in Edgeville. Equip yourself in standard melee gear, but wear a regen bracelet instead of standard combat gloves; this will help you restore lost HP from combat while you fish. .Take out of the bank a standard fishing rod, a stack of fishing bait, and a rune pickaxe; the pickaxe is to get living minerals from the corpses of the living rock creatures when they are defeated (level 73 Mining needed). Also take out several granite lobster pouches; each lasts about 40 minutes.

Run northwest, then west and south, past the Prayer Guild and towards Ice Mountain. Go south, cross the bridge into the area where the dwarves are, and continue until you see a ladder heading down to enter the Dwarven Mine.

Run south a little bit and you'll find the rope that grants access to the Living Rock Caverns.

Once in the cavern, head south, past the bank deposit area, and continue until you see a lot of players fishing; look for a cavefish shoal and head towards it. Summon a granite lobster and start fishing. Switch spots when they disappear (as normal when fishing) and deposit your catch when your inventory gets full. You should generally be able to avoid combat, but if you get a living rock creature on you that you can't shake, fight it, then pick up its random drop and mine it for its minerals (used to fish rocktail). Also be on the lookout for other creatures' drops, which many players leave behind, and rock creature corpses you can mine for living minerals (after waiting one minute from the time it is killed).

If you need to recharge your Summoning points, there is an obelisk up the rope just east of the cavern entrance. Don't forget to empty your granite lobster into the bank periodically, as it will stop foraging if it gets completely filled up.
