Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Method Description, Instructions and Tips for Success

General Description

Upon completion of the quest The Tower of Life, you gain access to a special feature that allows you to generate oddball creatures. You put items from two different monsters on an altar and then bring to life a creature that is a bit like each of the monsters its items came from; when you kill the monster it drops several of one of the items. Most of these are not very useful, but one is: the unicow. From one unicorn horn and a cowhide you create this monster, which drops 2 to 4 unicorn horns when it dies. Because all other methods of getting unicorn horns are so slow, this turns out to actually be the fastest way in the game to get them!

First of all, this is combat so you'll want to put on normal combat gear. You also need to bring one unicorn horn and a bunch of cowhides; you get more horns with each kill but the hides are used up. The Ardougne Achievement Diary provides rewards that are particularly helpful for this activity. First, completing the easy tasks gives you a cloak that will teleport you to the monastery south of Ardougne, shaving 30 seconds off each trip to the Tower of Life, as well as saving you a bit of money. But more importantly, wearing any Ardougne cloak causes some of the unicorn horns dropped by unicows to be noted! This allows you to stay longer on each trip, letting you get more horns per hour. The better the cloak, the more of the horns that drop in noted form. There is one drawback to this, however -- you have to be careful to ensure you don't run out of unnoted horns to operate the creature creation machine. This can be done by removing the cloak occasionally, as I describe in the specific method instructions for each method level.

Incidentally, I have also tested killing regular unicorns and also black unicorns in the Wilderness, and this method is much faster than the former, and a little faster (and much safer) than the latter.

Specific Method Details

Put on fighting gear, Ardougne cloak 2 and a ring of duelling (the extra bonuses from a combat ring aren't a big loss here). Take out a spirit terrorbird pouch and summon it. Then fill the bird with cowhides. Take out a 2-dose super set, one unicorn horn, and 24 more cowhides. (Use a new terrorbird for each trip so it doesn't expire at an inopportune time.)

Use your Ardougne Cloak 2 to teleport to the Kandarin monastery, then run east to the Tower of Life. Enter it and go down the trap door to the south. The altar you want is in the far northwest of the basement of the tower, so head there.

With the Ardougne cloak 2 equipped, most of your unicorn horn drops will be noted. Since you start with only one, to be safe, take off your cloak before activating the altar. Do the same any time you are down to just one horn.

To generate a unicow, "use" a unicorn horn and cowhide on the altar, in either order. Note that you do not need click "continue" on the message you get when doing this. Now immediately right-click the altar and choose to "Activate" it -- this time you do need to click through on the message you get from the homonculus. In a few seconds a unicow will appear somewhere and attack you. Kill it as fast as possible, and pick up the unicorn horns it drops. (Ignore the satchels and tea flasks, they are interesting but useless.)

Since most of your drops will be noted, fill up empty inventory space with bones from the unicows. These aren't worth a lot, but they're free, and you don't need the space for anything else, so why not?

When ready to bank, use the ring of duelling to return to Castle Wars, store the horns and repeat the process.
