General Description

Brine rats are one of the most underrated "money monsters" in the game -- they are relatively easy to kill and drop large numbers of death runes, noted fish and other useful items.

Fighting them with level 50 skills is pushing the limit of viability, but if you can complete the necessary quest and do have level 47 Slayer, it is worthwhile both for drops and combat training. With level 70 skills they are relatively easy to kill, and I recommend using Dharok's if you are comfortable with the set and have a good Internet connection -- you can kill them about 15-20% faster than is possible with With level 90 skills and up they are easy to kill, and I recommend using Dharok's if you are comfortable with the set and have a good Internet connection -- you can kill them about 15-20% faster than is possible with standard melee gear, a whip and defender. You also often get one-hit kills. Remember that you do not have to get yourself down to death's doorstep to be effective with Dharok's! Even 20 HP or so is fine, and is quite safe if you pay attention.

Specific Method Details

Equip yourself with whatever gear you decide to use. Withdraw from the bank an amulet of glory (for teleporting), dramen or lunar staff, spade, 4-dose super set, pack yak pouch and about 6 salmon or other cheap food. If using Dharok's you may wish to cause yourself to lose hitpoints before leaving, if this is your first trip, or you can just let your HP slowly drop as you fight.

Access the fairy ring network, which is most easily done by using a ring of slaying to teleport to Rellekka, then taking the ring just west of the cave entrance to Zanaris. Alternately, you can teleport to Edgeville and run northeast, over the bridge and south to the fairy ring there. In Zanaris, enter code "D K S" to access the snowy area in Rellekka. Run a bit north and dig with your spade near the windswept tree. After you land in the cave, click on your minimap in the area just to your north and you'll run east, north a bit and then west to the brine rats; you should have enough run energy to make it there before you run out.

Take your first dose of super set and start fighting the rats, picking up all runes and noted drops (don't bother with coins as they drop too few to devote an inventory slot to them). All the fish will be noted except for the swordfish, which are unnoted and come 9 at a time, and the occasional unnoted shark. Take as many of those as you can, using your spirit terrorbird to hold extras. Drop unneeded salmon (they are cheap).

Watch your health carefully if using Dharok's of course, and use food and potions as needed. Summon the yak when necessary to hold extra drops, and plan your trip length based on how many swordfish drops you get and whether you want to keep them all (more banking time) or leave some behind (less banking time). When done, use your amulet of glory to return to Edgeville, bank and repeat the process.
