I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.
One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.
If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.
Thanks for your understanding!
Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

At the top of each Beastopedia monster
page is a table that contains a picture of the monster and general information
about it. The data provided here include the most fundamental specifications
of the monster in question, such as where it can be found, its level,
its maximum damage potential, whether or not it is aggressive, and so
forth.
The table consists of a summary bar
along the top, a monster image, and a set of general information lines.
Summary Bar
The summary bar at the top of the
general information section contains the following five key pieces of
summary information on the monster:
The name of the monster as it appears in game.
In some cases there are multiple monsters that have the same name; if
they differ in terms of level then the Beastopedia refers to the monsters
with a level number after them. In special cases, an added descriptor
is provided, such as Spiritual Warrior {Zamorak} or Spiritual
Warrior {Saradomin}.
Level: The monsters combat level.
Life Points: The monsters nominal
life points total. Note that some monsters can seem to have far more
life points than this figure, due to regeneration, healing or other
special abilities, but those are not taken into account here.
Slayer Monster? Whether or not this monster
can be assigned by Slayer Masters. If so, then there is will be a Slayer
Information table
on the page just below the general information.
Slayer Level: For Slayer-only monsters,
the minimum Slayer level required for it to be assigned or killed. Regular
monsters that can also be assigned by Slayer Masters have an effective
Slayer level of 1.
Monster Image
Sponsored links help make RuneScoop possible; RuneScoop members don't see them. See here for more information about ads.
I have provided an image of each
monster in its native habitat so you can see how it appears.
Unlike other bestiaries, which usually just show a cut-out
of the monsters, I decided to show them in context. Where possible I
have tried to also illustrate the monsters in combat, but in other cases
they are depicted standing or walking around in their lairs.
All monsters are shown at the size
in which they appear in-game (i.e., they have not been enlarged or shrunk).
All images were taken in high-detail modeeven though I usually
play in low-detail mode for a higher frame rate, and I tested in low-detail
mode as well. I often took several shots to ensure I got one that showed
the monster as clearly as possible.
The images illustrate me wearing
at least one of the combat gear setups I recommend in the monsters
discussion. However, in some cases you may see a mismatch due to changes
in what I believe to be ideal equipment setups over time. For example,
the cape that comes as a reward for the quest Nomads Requiem
is now my standard go to cape for most types of combat,
but I wasnt going to retake a hundred monster images just for
that, so many monster pictures (especially lower-level ones) show me
in my skillcape.
Note that most of these pictures
contain images of myself (well, Qeltar), but some depict other
players.
General Information Lines
The rows next to and below the monster
image comprise the bulk of the general information table, including
the rest of the basic need to know data about the monster:
Creation/Revision Date: The date on which
this monsters entry was either added or revised.
Approximate Maximum Melee Hit: The monsters
maximum normal hit with its melee attack, if it has one. This is generally
the most accurate of the maximum hit figures as it is the easiest to
determine for most monsters, but may still be approximate (especially
since the change to life points makes this more difficult to assess).
Approximate Maximum Ranged Hit: The monsters
maximum normal hit with its ranged attack, if applicable. This is often
estimated, as it is more difficult to determine than the maximum melee
hit, and was made even harder by the change to life points.
Approximate Maximum Magic Hit: The monsters
maximum normal hit with its magic attack, if applicable. This may be
estimated, as it is more difficult to determine than the maximum melee
hit, and was made even harder by the change to life points.
Poison Type (Max): If the monster is poisonous,
specifies how it poisons a playeron contact or on a successful
hitand the maximum damage done when poisoning occurs.
There are two types of monster poison in RuneScape. Some monsters, like
cave crawlers, require a successful hit to poison you; others, such
as cave slimes, poison on contact, which means that as soon as you
start fighting them you will be poisoned (regardless of whether or not
they ever do damage). The former type is easier to deal with using regular
antipoison potions, while the latter requires longer-lasting super antipoisons.
Special Attacks: Any special attacks this
monster possesses, such as poison, dragon breath, paralysis and so forth.
When present, these abilities are generally explained in more detail
in the access
and combat section.
Special Defences: Any special defences
the monster has, including immunities, particularly high defence against
particular attack forms, etc. Any such abilities are usually described
further in the access
and combat section.
Special Equipment Needed: This can describe
two types of gear. The first is equipment needed to fight the monster
at all, such as the leaf-bladed spear or leaf-bladed sword for turoths
and kurasks. The second includes items that you could technically fight
without, but it would be foolish to try (like omitting an anti-dragon
or dragonfire shield for mithril dragons!)
Respawn Speed: The approximate number
of seconds it takes for a slain monster to regenerate on a full world.
Respawn time increases the fewer people there are on a world, up to
about double the nominal value for a nearly empty server.
Aggressiveness: Whether or not the monster
is aggressive, that is, will initiate combat. Also noted here are several
special cases, where relevant:
Monsters that are aggressive towards players
of any combat level (normally they will not attack a player more than
double their level).
Those that are permanently aggressive (remain
aggressive even after a long time in the area, instead of it wearing
off after about 10 minutes as usual.)
Oddball situations where aggressiveness is based
on what a player is wearing, getting too close to the monster, reacting
to attacks on other monsters, and so forth.
Retreating: Whether or not the monster
will attempt to run away from a player fighting it when it gets low
on life points.
Members or All Players: Whether the monster
can be fought only by members or also by free players.
Examine Text: The description of the monster
shown if you choose its Examine option. When a monster has
more than one of these, all are shown.
Primary Location and Number of Spawns:
The main location for the monsterthe spot where it is most often
fought or place normally associated with itand how many of the
monsters are found there. The symbol ~ means approximately
and is used in cases where I was unable to count monster instances or
wasnt sure.
Alternate Locations and Numbers of Spawns:
Secondary or alternative locations where the monster can be found, and
how many of the monster exist in each spot. Again, the symbol ~
means approximately. A question mark (?) means
I really did not know at all how many monsters were in a particular
spot.
Recommended Combat Style: My recommendation
to use melee, ranged, magic or any combat style on this monster.
Cannonability: Whether or not you can
use a cannon on this monster. In some cases this depends on the location
you choose; for example, you can use a cannon on black demons in Taverley
Dungeon, but not in the Chaos Tunnels.
Additional Information: If applicable,
a link to another page on RuneScoop where you can find out more about
the monster, or learn something relevant to fighting it.
