Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Beastopedia Monster Pages - Access and Combat Recommendations

In the center of each monster page, below the Slayer information table (for Slayer monsters) or the general information table (for others), you’ll find a special table of text with four large sections. This is one of the places where the Beastopedia goes beyond most RuneScape monster databases, by providing you with detailed explanations of how best to prepare for, find and fight all the monsters in the game.

This information is only present in the members’ only site, though.

As you might imagine, the level of detail provided really depends on the monster: there’s obviously a lot more to talk about when it comes to fighting a dark beast than fighting a chicken! Also, most of the observations provided are based on my own personal experience, and I do tend to provide more data for monsters that I fight frequently than ones I do rarely.

Note that in cases where multiple monsters are fought at the same time, the full discussions are found only with one monster. The others will have a short note explaining that this is a monster fought in tandem with others, and a link to the page where the full access and combat recommendations can be found.

Here is a bit more explanation of each of the four sections of the recommendations table.

Access Directions

I start out by describing to you where the monster is located, and roughly how you should go about getting there. As always, I try to tell you the fastest and most efficient ways of accessing dungeons and other places where monsters are found, using both standard and advanced means of getting around the world. For space reasons, I do not list off every possible way of traveling to each monster.

I have tried to make sure that my instructions are reasonably thorough, and I think most players who are at least reasonably familiar with getting around in RuneScape will be able to use them well. But at the same time, realize that this is a general monster guide—I couldn’t provide fully detailed directions for every spot, and of course, there aren’t any graphical maps on the monster pages. So while I can tell you roughly how to find the giant rock crabs in Waterbirth Dungeon, this won’t be a substitute for consulting a map, if you’ve never been there.

In the event that a monster lives in multiple locations, I describe the ones that are most commonly used, providing general directions to each. I also suggest which spots I think are best and why. I don’t bother with the more obscure spots, or ones with which I am not familiar.

Equipment Recommendations

This part of the table contains some general recommendations from me on what sort of equipment to wear. This is, of course, influenced by the combat style I suggest using for a particular monster—melee is my general preference due to its higher kill speed—but I also make suggestions for ranging or using magic, where appropriate.

In some situations I suggest alternative methods that may use specialty armor, such as the Verac’s or Dharok’s melee armor sets. In these situations be sure to also read the combat notes for additional details on how to use them best.

For more on the equipment I used personally while fighting, see the topic on issues and methods associated with the combat tests. You may also want to look in the drop logs, where you’ll find an equipment snapshot for each log, showing what I wore in my actual tests.

Supplies Recommendations

To go along with the equipment recommendations, I provide some ideas for you on what supplies to bring along to fight. The suggestions here encompass all of the following:

  • Food or prayer potions for meleeing.

  • Ammunition for ranging.

  • Runes for maging.

  • Enhancing potions (super sets and the like).

  • Other necessary potions (anti-poisons, antifire potions and so forth).

  • Alching runes, if I feel they are needed.

  • Miscellaneous items.

My goal is to tell you what you need for approximately an hour of combat. If you want to stay longer you’ll need to bring more “stuff”; if you want to leave sooner, you need less. Of course, you’ll also need to adjust by bringing more supplies if you are fighting a difficult monster and your levels are significantly lower than mine.

In some situations you’ll be banking more frequently because of unstackable drops, such as herbs. Here I try to give you my suggestion for how much you need in terms of supplies for shorter trips of 15, 20 or 30 minutes each. You’ll have to experiment and adjust my suggestions based on your preferences.

Familiar Recommendations

My suggestions for which Summoning familiar you should use when fighting this monster. As I mentioned elsewhere, I generally don’t use combat familiars, because I find the need to constantly call them into combat annoying. I usually use either beasts of burden to carry drops and/or supplies, or special beasts where appropriate (such as a macaw when fighting herb-dropping monsters.) In some cases I recommend just using a forager to get yourself some free cash; my favorite is the magpie.

I have a very high Summoning level, so if yours is lower, you may need to adjust my recommendations to suit your particulars.

Combat Notes

Once you know where to go, what to wear, and what to bring, it’s time to fight, and this final part of the table I give you my recommendations of how to successfully engage monsters in battle. This includes advice on all of the following:

  • Where exactly to fight various beasts (i.e., which spawn to use, where to stand and so forth).

  • What settings to use for particular weapons.

  • How best to avoid taking damage in combat.

  • Ways of conserving supplies.

  • What protection prayers to use and when.

  • Methods to speed up kills and deal with long respawn times when relevant.

  • How to use special gear when needed.

I also talk about how best to use a cannon for monsters where this is possible, and contrast and compare different combat styles to show you the pros and cons of each.

Again, my focus is mostly on the “more interesting” higher level monsters, but I do also try to give you some thoughts on what to do at lower levels, especially for the easier ones. A level 120 player clearly doesn’t need any help with killing cows, for instance, but a level 20 player might, so I try to provide some assistance there.

Drop Notes

In this final section, I provide a brief summary of the drops that you get from the monster, focusing on what they specialize in or are well-known for providing in noteworthy quantities. (Full information on drops can of course be found in the general drop information and drop list sections that appear later on the page.)

I also give you some recommendations on what drops to keep from various monsters, especially when they may be counter-intuitive. For example, did you know that the iron boots dropped by cave slimes and cockatrices are worth a lot of money? J
