Please Whitelist This Site?

I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.

One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.

If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.

Thanks for your understanding!

Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Gorak - Access and Combat Recommendations

Access Directions

Goraks live in their own special plane of existence, which is accessed via fairy ring code "D I R". You'll see them as soon as the teleport is complete.

You can fight them anywhere, but it's easier if you move away from the fairy ring to one of the edges of the lair, so you get tag-teamed less often.

For ranging or maging, you must lure a gorak so that it gets trapped along a wall edge; again, this must be done away from the center of the lair.

In order to interface with a beast of burden to exchange food and drops, you'll need to run behind one of the walls to get away from the beasts, as they never stop being aggressive.

Equipment

Goraks can hit for up to 140 points of damage, and they also hit right through protection prayers. The traditional way of dealing with this is to use the Guthans set, but the warspear is rather slow. Higher level players can avoid using it by taking advantage of the nearby bank in Zanaris and just using food, or employing a healing familiar. Another option for those with 92 Prayer is the Soul Split ancient curse.

For ranging or maging use standard equipment and try to trap the goraks along wall edges.

Finally, wear a ring of wealth -- yes, this is one place where it makes sense! Goraks frequently drop gems and other items on the infamous "rare drop wheel", and a ring of wealth significantly increases the number of gems and other items you get (but not the number of gorak claws).

Supplies

For meleeing, use extreme sets or super sets, which are particularly important here because the goraks slowly drain your stats when they hit you. You'll also need food, the amount of which depends on how often you plan to bank. Since I save big bones, I get by with a load of cheap food (salmon) with some also in my beast of burden.

Rangers should use high-quality ammunition, or kills will take an eternity; broad-tipped bolts are a good choice. Poisoning first using enchanted emerald bolts is also a good idea.

Familiar

If you are planning to bank big bones from the goraks, bring a beast of burden; otherwise, use a healing familiar.

Note that gorak claws are untradeable and so can't be put into a familiar, but you can put gems and bones into one.

Combat Notes

These are one of the nastiest monsters in the game. They hit hard, they hit through prayer, and they even occasionally drain your Attack, Strength, Defence and Prayer! For these reasons, many players prefer ranging them to meleeing. This is safer and greatly cuts down on food and potion costs, but is, of course, slower.

If you do melee, you'll need to use food and watch your health. Remember that the bank is not far away.

The only saving grace of goraks is that they are, effectively, very close to the bank in Zanaris, so take advantage of this. I personally aim for 15 minute trips, using up supplies and gathering drops, banking and repeating.

Drop Notes

Goraks are quest monsters, fought as part of A Fairy Tale, Part II; you need to kill them to get gorak claws to make a magic essence potion, and you can continue to do this after the quest is over as well. However, because of how slow and awful these are to fight, and how poor their other drops are, most players rarely bother with them, except for the occasional Slayer assignment.

Aside from claws, they give big bones on each drop; otherwise, their only drops are gems and occasionally other items on the "rare drop wheel", such as rune spears. I've also gotten a shield left half from a gorak before. As mentioned earlier, be sure to wear a ring of wealth here as it increases their gem/special drop rate by a significant amount.

Log Notes

Many more drops when using ring of wealth. Note that I got fewer kills in an hour here, which may be partially due to using the slower godsword, and partly due to less efficient inventory handling.

These monsters may have many other rare drops, as suggested by drop lists on other sites, but I've killed a few hundred and never gotten them.
