Access Directions | The tormented wraith -- there is only one -- resides in the Spiritual Realm, accessed using Jennica's ring after completion of Summer's End. Its physical location is the courtyard of the Dark Warriors' Fortress, in the southwestern corner of the Wilderness.
To get to the wraith, equip yourself in Edgeville, then run northwest until you see the moat that surrounds the fortress. Go around to the west where the bridge is, and cross the moat. You'll need to pass through several doors and corridors to get to the central courtyard, dodging aggressive dark warriors as you go. Once you get to the courtyard, activate Jennica's ring to enter the Spiritual Realm. Beware that if you are properly equipped (see below) and nobody else is there, you'll be attacked immediately. |
Equipment | Jagex made the tormented wraith a rather cool monster, with unique requirements and an interesting back story. It is the undead spirit of a man who was apparently tortured by the black knights, and in its afterlife is single-mindedly interested only in exacting revenge upon them. As such, it will attack on sight anyone who is equipped like a black knight, but will utterly ignore anyone who is not.
Jagex has implemented the monster to have very exacting and strict equipment requirements; if you are not wearing the right gear you cannot attack it -- the game will produce a message saying you are "unable to go through with" your attack. You are also prohibited from changing equipment during combat! Both of these behaviors are pretty unique, as far as I am aware.
The gear requirements are imposed on the head, body, legs, weapon and shield slots. For the head you must wear a black medium or full helm, or an elite black full helm. For the body, a black chainbody or platebody (elite is okay), and for the legs, black platelegs/plateskirt or the elite version. You can use any black melee weapon, black darts or black knives. If your weapon is not two-handed, your shield slot must contain a black square or kiteshield, or a black defender. And that's it: no other weapons, no other armor. No black dragonhide for rangers, no black mystic robes for mages. And you can't use a black crossbow either.
There are three main impacts of these requirements. First, combat is greatly slowed -- there's only so much damage you can do with a black scimitar or black 2h sword (the two best options). Second, you are pretty much forced to use prayer to defend yourself, since black armor is pretty much useless against a level 129. And third, mages and rangers have to try to make up for wearing melee armor by boosting their other slots. If ranging, bear in mind that you cannot pick up and replace your ammunition in combat, so make sure you bring plenty; if you run out mid-battle, you'll run up and melee the wraith. Maging is made easier by the newish ability to autocast without a staff, and is effective despite the armor requirements, as the wraith is fairly weak to magic. You'll still splash fairly often, though. |
Supplies | You pretty much have to use prayer here, so bring with prayer potions. You should also bring some food in case the monster spawns when you aren't expecting it -- he will hit over 20 pretty regularly on that awful armor. The wraith drops lots of black armor and weapons, most of which sell for more than their alch value on the Grand Exchange. So if you want, bring with a beast of burden to carry those home, or use alching runes otherwise.
As mentioned previously, rangers should bring lots of ammunition.
Always use extreme or super sets, as appropriate -- because of the equipment requirements, you need every advantage you can get. |
Familiar | Use a beast of burden if you want to stay for a while and save all the black equipment that the wraith drops. You will usually use prayer so a healer isn't that useful here. |
Combat Notes | If you want to fight this guy, go to as full a world as possible; during busy times, you may find someone already in that spot, and if so, then try another server.
Always use prayer when fighting, or you'll take heavy damage; there used to be some safe spots here, but they were removed in 2009 as part of a game engine update, and not replaced. I recommend also using boost prayers to speed up combat, because of how slow this is otherwise.
The wraith will attack on sight when he respawns, if you are wearing his favored equipment, and never seems to lose aggressiveness. Over time, these "pot shots" can really add up. To prevent them, temporarily unequip a piece of gear after each kill, and watch your minimap for the yellow dot to appear. When you see it, turn on your prayer, re-equip the item, and off you go. |
Drop Notes | The main attraction of the tormented wraith is the chance at getting a spirit shield or holy elixir, both of which are only otherwise dropped by the incredibly tough Corporeal Beast. However, these are very rare drops, and the wraith's combat restrictions, combined with its solitary spawn, limit the number of kills per hour to a maximum of about 60.
The wraith does have some other nice drops, such as 80 noted oak planks, and pairs of prayer potions. But again, you can't kill very many per hour, so you aren't going to get rich doing this. |
