Access Directions | Fiyr shades are found only in the shade tombs in the town of Mort'ton. The quickest way to get to the town is to use the short-cut from Canifis you learn about in the quest In Search of the Myreque. Go through the trap door south of the bar in Canifis, open the secret door to the south, then follow the tunnel to the end. Go through the doors into the swamp, then run south to the bridge. Cross the bridge, then run southwest/south to the ferryboat; click on it and you'll arrive in Mort'ton; the shade tomb is in the far north part of town.. You'll want to bank in Burgh de Rott, which is just south of Mort'ton.
To access the shade tomb to fight fiyr shades you need a silver shade key. To get one, pyre some asyn remains (obtained from Asyn Shades); after a few you'll likely get a silver key as a reward. Go to the shade tomb and open the door, then head south to the steel door. Go through and continue south to the end, then go west along the long corridor to the silver door. Open it and you'll find an area with a few fiyr shades. The best spot to fight is in and near the third room up from the bottom, which has two shades within it and a couple more that roam around the vicinity. |
Equipment | Melee is recommended as these cannot be safe-spotted. Since these can hit regularly for over 100 LP, and since inventory space is an issue, I recommend full Guthans, using a normal weapon and switching to the warspear for healing as needed.
An alternative to using Guthans is to wear prayer gear. This increases your costs, of course, as you'll need prayer potions, and they also take up inventory space.
The fastest way to kill fiyr shades is, of course, to Dharok them. As always, if you try this, be very careful.
Always wear a Salve amulet, as it will increase accuracy and damage. |
Supplies | Where lower-level shades can be fought with little or nothing in the way of supplies, fiyr shades are level 120 and so must be taken seriously. How to deal with them depends on your objective.
If you are killing and pyring shades, then try to use supplies (super sets, food, energy restoration) at the bank, and rely on Guthans for healing when needed. If you're killing and collecting remains, then bring with a 1-dose or 2-dose super set and some food (or prayer potions) for each trip, using the supplies as you go. Finally, if just fighting and not collecting remains, bring more supplies so you can stay longer.
A beast of burden is essential for carrying extra remains, if you are collecting or pyring them. I assumed in my tests the use of a spirit terrorbird, in order not to assume too high a Summoning level -- a higher beast is of course better.
All of the armor and weapon items you get from fiyr shade chests are worth alching. Bringing alching runes means you lose two inventory slots that could hold another set of pyre logs and remains. For this reason, I generally recommend not bringing alching runes and just alching back at the bank. The exception to this would be if you want to take back as many remains as possible from the shade tomb, in which case alching frees up space for more remains. I recommend around 1 set of alching runes for every 2 shades pyred, though what you get is of course highly variable. |
Familiar | A beast of burden is essential for carrying extra remains, if you are collecting or pyring them. In my tests I used a spirit terrorbird, in order not to assume too high a Summoning level -- a higher beast is of course better. |
Combat Notes | Like all shades, fiyr shades begin as shadows, dark circles that float around on the ground. They are aggressive and will attack all players, and they have a weaken attack that can lower your Strength.
If fighting the shades for combat XP or a Slayer assignment, you can kill up to 170 of them per hour, depending on your level and skill. If collecting the remains and banking them in Burgh de Rott, the kill count will of course drop somewhat, due to the time needed to pick them up and bank them; again, a beast of burden is extremely useful. In my tests using a spirit terrorbird, I can kill and bank about 135 fiyr shade remains per hour. With a war tortoise, I can do more. If you do plan to kill and collect shades without pyring, you are better off bringing 2-dose super set vials and some food to the shade tomb. Use the resources as you fight, then drop the empty vials.
Fiyr remains are the highest level of the five types and provide decent rewards, including the best chance at fine cloth (too bad it's now worth very little. :( ) Like other shades except loars, fiyrs are only in the shade tomb where you go to use keys. The most sensible approach is to start with a load of remains, pyre them, take the keys to the tomb, use the keys, then kill more fiyr shades and take their remains back to repeat the cycle.
In the discussion that follows, I assume you have level 80 Firemaking (mandatory), and level 52 Summoning for a spirit terrorbird familiar, which is quite useful; if you can use a higher-level beast of burden, even better. I also assume you already have some 4-dose sacred oils (bought or made at the temple) and some magic logs. I further assume you are not bringing alching runes, which lets you do 19 pyres at a time instead of 18.
To get started, go to the tomb and get 19 fiyr remains (assuming you are using a spirit terrorbird); you'll need a silver key to start out, so pyre some asyn shades as mentioned above until you get one.
Now, get out a spirit terrorbird pouch and summon it, then take out your Guthans warspear and a tinderbox. Withdraw 13 magic logs (the only kind you can use for fiyr remains) and 13 4-dose sacred oils, to make 13 magic pyre logs. Store 12 of these in the terrorbird, bank the empty vials, then withdraw from the bank 6 more oils and 6 more logs, along with a super set and any food needed to heal from the prior run and potions/scrolls for restoring run energy. Make 6 more pyre logs, take a sip of each potion, eat food as needed, restore energy, and bank all the leftover potions and vials. Now withdraw 19 fiyr remains from your bank, which should fill up your inventory.
Run north out of Burgh de Rott and veer west until you find one of the pyre areas. Burn 7 shades using the 7 pyre logs in your inventory, take more logs from the spirit terrorbird and repeat, then take the final set of logs from the familiar and do those. Each time you burn a shade a reward will appear on the stand next to the pyre: a key or some gold. With fiyr shades you can get any of the five silver keys; coin amounts are 2,000-4,000 gp. You also get 100 Prayer XP and 404.5 Firemaking XP per pyre. Grab the key or gold quickly as it disappears off the stand in a few seconds. You'll usually get around 14-16 keys per 19 shades.
When done, run north to the shade tomb and open the door. Go south and open the steel door, then continue south to the end of the north-south hallway. Now turn west and run to the silver door there and open it. Run to the silver door on the farthest south room, which has silver chests with red trim and brown trim, and no fiyr shades. Use all of your red and brown trimmed keys. Each chest has a reward inside, which can be one or more items and possibly gold as well. Be sure to click "Continue" after the initial message; sometimes you'll get a bonus of a few swamp paste (to use building the temple.)
Exit this small room and go north to the second northern-most room, which has two fiyr shades within it (the others have only one). This room has chests with crimson and black trimmed locks, so use those keys here. If attacked by the fiyr shades in this room, kill them and take their remains for the next room. If you have no purple trimmed keys, save one crimson or black key and don't use it yet.
Fight the fiyr shades in the crimson/black chest room; if you are high level and kill them faster than the respawn, you can leave the room to fight some of the shades in the hall, then go back in later. Keeping the key lets you alternate between the corridor and the room so you don't have to wait around; this is needed as there are only a few of these shades. Continue until you have 19 remains; uuse the beast of burden to carry armor/weapons to save run energy, and drop the tinderbox if necessary. You can kill more shades if you want extra remains (which can be sold as well).
When done, exit the tomb (you don't need keys to exit) and return to Burgh de Rott. Bank, alch unwanted items and get ready to repeat the process; it should take around 17 minutes total for 19 pyres. |
Drop Notes | Fiyr shades drop only fiyr remains. These can be pyred to get the highest-level rewards from the Shades of Mort'ton chests. This includes mainly adamant armor and weapons, along with occasional rune items (but also some mithril), noted yew and magic logs, decent jewelry, and a good selection of fine cloth. |
