Access Directions | Asyn shades are found only in the shade tombs in the town of Mort'ton. The quickest way to get to the town is to use the short-cut from Canifis you learn about in the quest In Search of the Myreque. Go through the trap door south of the bar in Canifis, open the secret door to the south, then follow the tunnel to the end. Go through the doors into the swamp, then run south to the bridge. Cross the bridge, then run southwest/south to the ferryboat; click on it and you'll arrive in Mort'ton; the shade tomb is in the far north part of town.. You'll want to bank in Burgh de Rott, which is just south of Mort'ton.
To access the shade tomb to fight asyn shades you need a black or silver shade key. A quick way of getting one is to pyre some riyl remains (obtained from Riyl Shades); after one or two you'll get a black key as a reward. Go to the shade tomb and open the door, then head south to the steel door. Go through and continue south to the end, then go east along the long corridor to the black door. Open it and you'll find an area with over a dozen asyn shades. |
Equipment | Melee is recommended as these cannot be safe-spotted. Since these can hit fairly regularly, and since inventory space is an issue, I recommend full Guthans, using a normal weapon and switching to the warspear for healing as needed.
An alternative to using Guthans is to wear prayer gear. This increases your costs, of course, as you'll need prayer potions, and they also take up inventory space.
Always wear a Salve amulet, as it will increase accuracy and damage. |
Supplies | Where lower-level shades can be fought with little or nothing in the way of supplies, asyn shades are level 100 and so are more of a challenge. How to deal with them depends on your objective.
If you are killing and pyring shades, then try to use supplies (super sets, food, energy restoration) at the bank, and rely on Guthans for healing when needed. If you're killing and collecting remains, then bring with a 1-dose or 2-dose super set and some food (or prayer potions) for each trip, using the supplies as you go. Finally, if just fighting and not collecting remains, bring more supplies so you can stay longer.
A beast of burden is essential for carrying extra remains, if you are collecting or pyring them. I assumed in my tests the use of a spirit terrorbird, in order not to assume too high a Summoning level -- a higher beast is of course better.
Nearly all of the items you get from asyn shade chests are worth alching. Bringing alching runes means you lose two inventory slots that could hold another set of pyre logs and remains. For this reason, I generally recommend not bringing alching runes and just alching back at the bank. The exception to this would be if you want to take back as many remains as possible from the shade tomb, in which case alching frees up space for more remains. I recommend around 1 set of alching runes for every 2 shades pyred, though what you get is of course highly variable. |
Familiar | A beast of burden is essential for carrying extra remains, if you are collecting or pyring them. In my tests I used a spirit terrorbird, in order not to assume too high a Summoning level -- a higher beast is of course better. |
Combat Notes | Like all shades, asyns begin as asyn shadows, dark purplish circles that float around on the ground. They are aggressive and will attack all players. They will occasionally lower your Strength skill by a few points.
If fighting the shades for combat XP or a Slayer assignment, you can kill up to 210 of them per hour, depending on your level and skill. If collecting the remains and banking them in Burgh de Rott, the kill count will of course drop somewhat, due to the time needed to pick them up and bank them; again, a beast of burden is extremely useful. In my tests using a spirit terrorbird, I can kill and bank about 165 asyn shade remains per hour. With a war tortoise, I can do more. If you do plan to kill and collect shades without pyring, you are better off bringing 1-dose or 2-dose super set vials and some food to the shade tomb. Use the resources as you fight, then drop the empty vials.
Asyn remains are the second-highest level of the five types and provide moderately high-level rewards. Like the Phrin Shades and Riyl Shades, asyn shades are only in the shade tomb where you go to use keys. Therefore, the most sensible approach is to start with a load of remains, pyre them, take the keys to the tomb, use the keys, then kill more asyn shades and take their remains back to repeat the cycle.
In the discussion that follows, I assume you have level 63 Firemaking (mandatory), and level 52 Summoning for a spirit terrorbird familiar, which is quite useful; if you can use a higher-level beast of burden, even better. I also assume you already have some 4-dose sacred oils (bought or made at the temple) and eucalyptus or yew logs. I further assume you are not bringing alching runes, which lets you do 19 pyres at a time instead of 18.
To get started, go to the tomb and get 19 asyn remains (assuming you are using a spirit terrorbird); you'll need a black key to start out, so pyre some riyl shades as mentioned above until you get one.
Now, get out a spirit terrorbird pouch and summon it, then take out your Guthans warspear and a tinderbox. Withdraw 13 eucalyptus/yew logs and 13 4-dose sacred oils and use them on each other to make 13 pyre logs. Store 12 of these in the terrorbird, bank the empty vials, then withdraw from the bank 6 more oils and 6 more logs, along with a super set, any food needed to heal from the prior run, and energy potions or Tireless Run scrolls. Make 6 more pyre logs, take a sip of each potion, eat food as needed, restore energy, and bank all the leftover potions and vials. Now withdraw 19 asyn remains from your bank, which should fill up your inventory.
Yew pyre logs are the traditional choice for asyn shades, but the newer eucalyptus also works; it gives you nearly the same Prayer XP and slightly less Firemaking XP, but the cost is lower; the choice it's up to you. You can also use magic logs for asyn remains, but that would be rather wasteful -- if you have the Firemaking level for those, you should pyre Fiyr Shades instead.
Run north out of Burgh de Rott and veer west until you find one of the pyre areas. Burn 7 shades using the 7 pyre logs in your inventory, take 7 logs from the spirit terrorbird and repeat, then take the final 5 logs from the familiar and do those. Each time you burn a shade a reward will appear on the stand next to the pyre: a key or some gold. With asyn shades you can get either of the three highest black keys (crimson, black or purple trim) or the two lowest silver keys (red or brown). Coin amounts are 800-900 gp. You also get approximately 80 Prayer XP, and Firemaking XP depending on the logs used (246 for eucalyptus; 255 for yew). Grab the key or gold quickly as it disappears off the stand in a few seconds. You'll usually get around 13-15 keys per 19 shades.
When done, run north to the shade tomb and open the door. Go south and open the steel door, then continue south to the end of the north-south hallway. Now turn west and run to the silver door there and open it. Run to the silver door on the farthest south room, which conveniently has silver chests with red trim and brown trim, and no fiyr shades!
Open each chest to collect the reward inside, which can be one or more items and possibly gold as well. Be sure to click "Continue" after the initial message; sometimes you'll get a bonus of a few swamp paste (to use building the temple.)
Exit the silver chest room and go back out the main silver door. Run all the way east along the very long corridor to a black door. Open it and run west past the asyn shades to one of the black chest rooms. Open the door and then open the black chests with the appropriate trim colors matching your keys. You may need to occasionally stop to kill an asyn shade in the room, but sometimes you can avoid it.
Now exit the black chest room and kill 19 asyn shades, picking up their remains (use the beast of burden to carry armor/weapons to save run energy, and drop the tinderbox if necessary.) You can kill more shades if you want extra remains (which can be sold as well). When done, exit the tomb (you don't need keys to exit) and return to Burgh de Rott. Bank, heal damage, alch unwanted good items and sell lesser items to the store in Mort'ton, and get ready to repeat the process; it should take around 16 minutes total for 19.
Note that because of the black and silver chests being so far apart, asyn shades require the most running around of any type. You may wish to bring with scrolls or potions to restore energy if your Agility level is low. |
Drop Notes | Asyn shades drop only asyn remains. These can be pyred to get mid-to-high-level rewards from the Shades of Mort'ton chests. This includes mainly mithril and adamant armor and weapons, noted yew and magic logs, decent jewelry, and a good selection of fine cloth. |
