Access Directions | The Poison Waste Sewers are accessed using the spirit tree network. From where the tree drops you off, run west, then south to the sewer entrance and go inside. Click the ladder and you'll be in a room with two tortoises; this is the most convenient place to fight them. it does tend to get crowded at times, and you really do need both of them to yourself, so world hop until you find a spot without anyone else already present. If you want to fight these in peace and quiet without having others show up to fight over those two spawns, go to the end of the dungeon instead. Right before the room where you fight three warped terrorbirds in the quest The Path of Glouphrie, you'll find two tortoises in the same spot that you can alternate between. Ideally you should use this spot with a pack yak so you can bank drops like tortoise shells remotely.
The best place for banking is Mobilising Armies -- you can use a ring of duelling to take you right there, use the bank, and then return to the dungeon using the spirit tree there. |
Equipment | You need the crystal chime you obtained during The Path of Glouphrie in order to make these monsters attackable. Without it, you cannot damage them.
For meleeing, you can wear standard gear; no need for Barrows as they do not hit hard. That said, Dharoks is quite effective here, and also quite safe, so it is what I now recommend. These tortoises are large and it's easy to trap them so safe spotting is no problem for mages and rangers, and they can wear style-appropriate gear.
You can also bring a cannon with if you wish. Just bear in mind that you must constantly keep the tortoises attackable using the chimes or you'll be wasting a lot of cannonballs hitting zeroes.
Wear a black mask or Slayer helmet if on a Slayer assignment. |
Supplies | In addition to their random drops, warped tortoises also provide big bones on each kill. Most players leave these behind, but with the value of all types of bones so high these days, it is definitely worthwhile to bank these. That means relatively short trips of course; higher level players kill the tortoises faster and so have shorter trips, but this is offset somewhat by the ability to use beasts of burden. With my maxed stats, I've found that it takes me usually around 12 minutes to fill up on drops (including bones). So I use 2-dose super sets (made by splitting 4-dose sets by using the on empty vials). Since I am usually Dharoking, I bring with strawberry baskets, which provide compact food in 60 LP increments. |
Familiar | Use your best beast of burden, even the expensive war tortoise pouch (ironically enough, made using shells that these monsters drop). |
Combat Notes | Warped tortoises start out immune to all attacks; in order to damage them you used to have to "chime them" by clicking on your crystal chimes and then clicking on the monster. In early 2010, Jagex changed this so that you "auto-chime" them -- you just attack and they instantly become vulnerable. I personally think this removes much of the "flavor" of these monsters, but it does make them a lot easier to kill. It doesn't make them any faster, though (which at least was nice confirmation that I was chiming efficiently all along! :) ) |
Drop Notes | Warped tortoises are what I call "gift monsters" -- they are so easy for their level and have such good drops that it seems like they were put in the game to reward players able to fight them.
Their most noteworthy drops are tortoise shells, which are used in the Summoning skill and are very valuable. You may also get one to three "perfect shells" as a dropl these cannot be sold, but you can trade them to Barlak in Dorgesh-Kaan for 600 gp and 500 Crafting XP! Save them up and then trade them in when you have a bunch.
That's not all you'll get here though: you receive a set of big bones for every kill, and these guys also drop noted coal and mith ore, unnoted adamantite ore, rune warhammers and pickaxes, mith platebodies, swamp tar and more! As if that weren't enough, they are pretty good blue charm droppers as well.
Incidentally, these tortoises sometimes drop one to three tangled toads' legs, an item of gnome cuisine. These are quite valuable, so don't eat them unless you must! |
