Access Directions | Riyl shades are found only in the shade tombs in the town of Mort'ton. The quickest way to get to the town is to use the short-cut from Canifis you learn about in the quest In Search of the Myreque. Go through the trap door south of the bar in Canifis, open the secret door to the south, then follow the tunnel to the end. Go through the doors into the swamp, then run south to the bridge. Cross the bridge, then run southwest/south to the ferryboat; click on it and you'll arrive in Mort'ton; the shade tomb is in the far north part of town.. You'll want to bank in Burgh de Rott, which is just south of Mort'ton.
To access the shade tomb to fight riyl shades you need a steel, black or silver shade key. A quick way of getting one is to pyre some phrin remains (obtained from Phrin Shades); after one or two you'll get a steel key as a reward. Go to the shade tomb and open the door, then head south to the steel door. Go through and you'll find an area with several riyl shades. |
Combat Notes | Riyl shades begin as riyl shadows, dark circles that float around on the ground. They are aggressive and will attack all players. Like other shades, they can occasionally weaken your Strength stat.
If fighting the shades for combat XP or a Slayer assignment, you can kill up to 300 of them per hour, depending on your level and skill. If collecting the remains and banking them in Burgh de Rott, the kill count will of course drop drastically, due to the time needed to pick them up and bank them; again, a beast of burden is extremely useful. In my tests using a bull ant, I can kill and bank about 215 shade remains per hour. With a war tortoise, I can do more, and a pack yak even more still. If you do plan to kill and collect shades without pyring, you are better off bringing 1-dose super set vials and some food to the shade tomb. Use the resources as you fight, then drop the empty vials.
Riyl remains are the middle level of the five types and provide moderate rewards. Like the Phrin Shades, riyl shades are only in the shade tomb where you go to use keys. Therefore, the most sensible approach is to start with a load of remains, pyre them, take the keys to the tomb, use the keys, then kill more riyl shades and take their remains back to repeat the cycle.
In the discussion that follows, I assume you have level 35 Firemaking (mandatory), and level 40 Summoning for a bull ant familiar, which is quite useful; if you can use a higher-level beast of burden, even better. I also assume you already have some 4-dose sacred oils (bought or made at the temple) and willow logs. I further assume you are not bringing alching runes, which lets you do 18 pyres at a time instead of 17.
To get started, go to the tomb and get 18 riyl remains (assuming you are using a bull ant); you'll need a steel key to start out, so pyre some phrin shades as mentioned above until you get one.
Now, get out a bull ant pouch and summon it, then take 16 willow logs and 12 4-dose sacred oils. Use 12 of the oils 12 of the logs, then combine the leftover 1-dose oils into four more 3-dose oils and use them on the remaining logs. Store 9 of the logs in the bull ant, bank the empty vials, then withdraw from the bank 2 more oils and logs to make a total of 18 pyre logs. Also take out a super set and energy or Unburden scrolls. Take a sip of each potion, restory your run energy, and bank all the leftover potions and oils. Now withdraw 18 riyl remains from your bank, which should fill up your inventory.
Note that you can use any type of logs willow or above, but I recommend willows as they are cheap and the amount of Prayer XP is about the same for all logs. The higher-level logs give more Firemaking XP but cost more, so it's up to you. Remember that if your Firemaking level is high you should consider burning higher-level shades instead of using higher logs with riyl remains, so you can get better rewards.
Run north out of Burgh de Rott and veer west until you find one of the pyre areas. Burn 9 shades using the 9 pyre logs in your inventory, then take the second set of 9 logs from the bull ant and repeat. Each time you burn a shade a reward will appear on the stand next to the pyre: a key or some gold. With riyl shades you can get either of the two highest steel keys (black trim or purple trim) or the three lowest black keys (red, brown or crimson trim). Coin amounts are 600-700 gp. You also get Prayer XP and Firemaking XP depending on the logs used. You only have a few seconds to grab the key or gold before it disappears, so don't be too slow! You'll usually get around 12-14 keys per 18 shades.
When done, run north to the shade tomb and open the door. Go south and open the steel door. If you have any steel keys, run to the steel chest room doors to the east or west and open one. Find the chests that match the keys you have. Open each chest to collect the reward inside, which can be one or more items and possibly gold as well. Be sure to click "Continue" after the initial message; sometimes you'll get a bonus of a few swamp paste (to use building the temple.) Try to avoid the shades as they'll try to attack you, wasting your time and health, and interrupting the chance to get that swamp paste.
Exit the steel chest room and take the passage heading south. Turn to the east and follow a long corridor to a black door. Open it and run west past aggressive Asyn Shades to one of the black chest rooms. Open the door and then open the black chests with the appropriate trim colors matching your keys. You may need to occasionally stop to kill an asyn shade in the room, but sometimes you can avoid it.
Now exit the black chest area and kill 18 riyl shades, picking up their remains (use the beast of burden to carry armor/weapons to save run energy, and drop the tinderbox if necessary.) You can kill more shades if you want extra remains (which can be sold as well). When done, exit the tomb (you don't need keys to exit) and return to Burgh de Rott. Bank, heal damage, alch unwanted items, and repeat; it should take around 14.5 to 15 minutes total for 18. |
