Green Dragon - Access and Combat Recommendations
Access Directions
For many years green dragons were notorious for only being found in the Wilderness, but in early 2008 Jagex put them in two rooms in the new Chaos Tunnels, finally providing a non-Wilderness option. It has its own drawbacks, though -- it takes longer to get to them in the tunnels, the area is multicombat, and the green dragons share their room with (aggressive) baby black dragons. Which is better depends on your stats and your preferences. The basic trade-off is that the Wilderness areas are easier for actual combat, but there's the revenant risk. The Tunnels have no revs, but you must be able to handle multicombat with high-level, aggressive monsters.
To fight in the Wilderness, the best approach is to use a games necklace to go to Clan Wars. Then run east, northeast around the lava and due east until you come to a large green dragon area. Fight until you're out of supplies or your inventory is full, teleport out, bank and repeat.
To fight in the western location in the Wild, just run west/northwest from Edgeville; it's pretty far, though. The spot near the lava maze is not convenient, but can be reached (unreliably) using the Wilderness teleport system.
There are two ways to go in reaching the green dragons in the Chaos Tunnels: either run through the Wilderness to a rift and enter there, or use the Dagon'Hai tunnels, which let you avoid the Wild entirely. The Wilderness rift is much faster.
To use the rift, bank at Edgeville or the Grand Exchange, then enter the Wild on the east side of the bridge and run northeast to the rift. Run south, take the portal there and you'll be in the dragons' room. Beware that the room where you enter has aggressive crypt and shadow spiders; the latter are level 52 and massively drain Prayer, so if below level 105 watch out.
To use the Dagon'hai entrance, bank in Varrock East. Run east out of town and north to the statue, then enter. Run northwest and take the portal you used in the hunt for Surok. You'll be in a room with aggressive ant soldiers and workers; don't underestimate them -- they hit very hard for their levels! Run north, take a portal, run west, enter another portal, finally run south and enter the portal there to get to the dragons.
Equipment
An anti-dragon or dragonfire shield is generally considered a "must", though if you fight with Protection from Magic and use an antifire potion you won't be hit by firebreath. The dragonfire shield is better for meleers, of course. Another option is to use the new super antifire potion (Herblore level 85 required), which lets you get away without the shield, so you can use two-handed weapons. But be careful about bringing fancy equipment (such as Barrows sets) into the Wilderness.
If fighting in the Wilderness, it's obviously advisable not to bring your best gear, in case of revenant attack. I do recommend using a forinthry brace so you can still teleport if attacked by revenants (even though I didn't use one for my drop log).
Since the revs like to fight with magic, high-level players with high Defence are better off using black dragonhide armor, even though these are melee monsters. I use black dhide myself, and substitute out my amulet of fury for an amulet of glory as well, just in case. I wear a ring of duelling (instead of my usual berserker ring) for quick bank access.
If ranging, bring standard ranging gear, but again, not anything expensive: leave the ranger boots and Robin Hood hat at home.
Things are obviously quite different if you're fighting in the Chaos Tunnels. For mid-level players, prayer gear is strongly advised, due to it being a multicombat area. High-level players can get by fighting without prayer, by using high-defence Barrows armor, super defence potions and food.
Supplies
Super sets are advised if meleeing without prayer, or Zamorak brews and super strengths if meleeing with prayer. Rangers should use ranging potions, of course.
Antifire potions are strongly recommended, as they will greatly cut down on the amount of food required; super antifires are mandatory for using two-handed weapons.
The number of doses of potions and the amount of food you bring really depends on how often you plan to bank. This in turn depends on what resources you plan to keep and how fast you kill the dragons. How many people are around also is a factor. You will have to experiment to find out what mix of supplies best suits your playing style. You'll also need more food if fighting without prayer in the Chaos Tunnels.
For example, if you are banking the dragon bones -- as most people do, given their current value -- you'll bank about twice as often as if you bury the bones and bank the hides. Another factor is if you have a high enough Summoning level to use a good beast of burden. Again, this cuts down on the number of banking runs.
If using a war tortoise to carry dragonhides, a high level player who can kill dragons quickly can get a full load of hides and drops in 15-20 minutes. For each trip you could then bring 2-dose super sets and a 3-dose antifire potion.
Note that if using a gaming necklace to access Clan Wars, some people like to just drop it to make room for more bones/hides and use a new necklace on each trip (they are cheap).
A one-click teleport is a good idea, especially until you get comfortable with these dragons, and especially if you have a combat level that makes you a frequent target for revenants.
Familiar
A beast of burden is recommended, and this is one place where even the overpriced war tortoise pouch is worthwhile to cut down on banking runs. If you can summon a pack yak, you may want to consider using Winter Storage scrolls so you can stay in place and bank even less often. This can be useful especially during busy times when you want to "hold your spot" so other players don't take it.
A combat familiar isn't really useful on these because they die quickly and the real problem is finding enough free spawns.
Combat Notes
These are the weakest of the color dragons, which is why they are only in the Wilderness or in a rather dangerous spot in the Chaos Tunnels. High-level players can cut through them like butter, though; it generally takes me no more than about 20 seconds per kill. Mid-level players will have a more difficult time.
Be sure to watch for messages indicating that you are getting hit by firebreath, and take more antifire potion as needed.
While the dragons are easy, the revenants in the Wilderness areas are not; they can be a major nuisance. Watch out for them, and be ready to bail out if you come under attack and don't feel like you have enough supplies to fight back.
These dragons are insanely popular, and the Wilderness locations are perpetually crowded. I strongly advise against even trying them there during peak periods; you'll spend half your time standing around twiddling your thumbs. If you really want to fight during busy times, use the Chaos Tunnels. But even there, they are now often swarmed, especially since the 2009 Prayer update.
If you do go to the Chaos Tunnels, and you're fighting without prayer, use the terrain to block some of the baby black dragons so they can't swarm on you. Try to avoid having the two dragons on the east side both attacking at once.
When fighting in either spot, be sure to look for drops left behind by other players, some of which may make you laugh -- why do people leave behind stacks of 75 water runes, I wonder?
Drop Notes
Obviously valued for their dragon bone and dragonhide drops, green dragons are also a good source of nature and water runes, as well as providing a small number of herbs, alchables, and charms.
Be sure to check the ground for valuable items left behind -- I'm constantly amazed to see dragonhides, stacks of water runes and other useful items left on the ground here.
Four trips, with bones buried and hides and other valuable drops banked. Note that I did this test during a quiet time of day -- at peak times kill count would be much lower due to competition.
