I know everyone hates ads. But please understand that I am providing premium content for free that takes hundreds of hours of time to research and write. If I can't make at least a little bit of money to support my family via this site, I'll have to stop working on it.
One alternative is to become a RuneScoop member. It's cheap, you get access to all of the site with no ads, and you help keep the lights on around here.
If you want to use this site for free, I'd be grateful if you could add RuneScoop to the whitelist for Adblock. To do so, just open the Adblock menu and select "Disable on Runescoop.com". Or go to the Tools menu and select "Adblock Plus Preferences...". Then click "Add Filter..." at the bottom, and add this string: "@@http://*runescoop.com/*". Then just click OK.
Thanks for your understanding!
Sincerely... Qeltar, aka Charles, your hard-working host and RuneScape guide-writer extraordinaire. :)

Brine Rat - Access and Combat Recommendations
Access Directions
Use the fairy rings to go to code "D K S". Walk north to the windswept tree, then dig near it; you'll drop down into the cave you visited during Olaf's Quest. Run east, go around the corner to the north and then run west to the chamber with the brine rats. Drop your spade to make room for another drop or bones.
Equipment
High-level players can get by with standard melee gear, especially if using a healing familiar. Other options include Guthans.(for defence and healing) or Dharoks (with food or prayer).
For ranging, wear standard gear such as dragonhide. A crystal bow works well here, since the safe spots are across obstacles and so Ava's devices won't work properly.
A cannon is useful here to speed up kills, especially when combined with Dharoks, though obviously that's expensive.
Finally, you need a spade to get into the cavern, and usually also a lunar/dramen staff for access to the area.
Supplies
Bring super sets for meleeing, or ranging potions for ranging. You will also need food for healing, often even if using another method.
These monsters are tailor-made for Bones to Peaches: they drop bones, earth runes and water runes! So with a stack of natures you can stay a long time.
Familiar
The bunyip familiar is also perfect here, as it can not only heal you but transform all those unnoted swordfish that would otherwise go to waste into handy water runes. Otherwise, bring a beast of burden to carry some of them home.
Combat Notes
These monsters are very quick and easy to kill, as they have only 500 LP. They can hit pretty hard for their level, though.
Drop Notes
These are superb, underrated drop monsters, which provide large quantities of noted fish, death runes, gold charms and the occasional brine sabre.
Don't bother picking up coin drops here, as it's usually 1, 2 or 4 coins and will only slow you down.
Using Dharoks without a cannon results in only marginal gains over a whip and defender. The reason is because the rats have 500 LP, which means you don't get many 1-hit kills with Dharoks, and then must wait longer for a second hit.
Using Dharoks and a cannon increased kill count by about 50%. Note that I actually got fewer deaths than on my straight melee trip (where I had great luck with those) but a lot more sharks.
As you can see, these have excellent drops, though that number of death runes is well above average -- I got lucky on this trip (including the brine sabre, which is so rare that the one I got here was my first one ever.)
