Access Directions | Teleport to Edgeville and walk south to Barbarian Village. Go down the hole in the center of town to enter the first level of the stronghold, then use the portal in the southeast corner of the entry room to bypass the maze, taking you to the center of the first level. Climb down the ladder there to the second level. Take the shortcut portal there, then go down to the third level. Repeat again, going through the third level shortcut to the center of that level. Go north, then east and south, through two sets of double doors to the catablepons. (There are other levels of these monsters in different rooms.) |
Equipment | These monsters primarily attack with melee, but also have a very annoying weakening attack; magic defence is very helpful to reduce how often this affects you. I wear my standard magic defence melee setup based on black dragonhide.
Rangers and mages can use a safe spot in the room and hence can wear standard ranged or magic gear, both of which provide good magic defence. |
Supplies | Meleers should bring super sets as always -- two sets per hour is what I use -- but should add to these extra potions to deal with the magic attack. I suggest two 4-dose regular restore potions and at least one extra super strength. Use the extra super strength doses as needed, preceding with a restore potion dose if your Strength is below its normal level.
High-level players will need only a small amount of food; mid-level players will need more, and may wish to bring extra food in a beast of burden, or use a healing familiar. (Note that I used pineapple pizzas in my log for these monsters, but that was when they were cheap -- you can use more cost-effective food here.) |
Familiar | A healing familiar is a good choice here if you can use one; otherwise, bring a beast of burden. |
Combat Notes | These monsters are aggressive to all players for around 10 minutes, regardless of combat level. Their melee attack is tepid, but the real hassle is the weakening attack. While you can only cast this once per monster, they have no such restriction -- they cast it early and often, so you need to keep your magic D up and use those restore potions and strength potions as needed.
If you want to range or mage these, there's a "pseudo" safe spot just inside the north doors. I say "pseudo" because in some cases one of the catablepons may be able to get you there, but usually it works. Note that the weaken attack will, of course, still get you there, but it doesn't matter if you aren't meleeing, right? :) |
Drop Notes | Given that they are fairly tough for their level, and given the good drops provided by the "boss" monsters on level 2 (flesh crawlers) and level 4 (ankous) of the Security Stronghold, catablepons have rather mundane drops. You should expect small numbers of runes, some noted pure essence and coal, some mithril arrows and a few miscellaneous items. |
