Access Directions | The Haunted Woods of Morytania is the normal home of vampires. They can also be found in the area surrounding the Abandoned Mine, just west of the town of Burgh de Rott. This latter spot is the better place to fight for several reasons. First, it is close to a bank, using the fence shortcut. Second, there are several vampires there that are close together. Third, there are no other monsters there; in the Haunted Woods you'll be distracted by attacks from leeches (unless you're over level 104) which can be quite annoying.
Get to Burgh de Rott via Mort'ton, by using the short-cut from Canifis you learn about in the quest In Search of the Myreque. Go through the trap door south of the bar in Canifis, open the secret door to the south, then follow the tunnel to the end. Go through the doors into the swamp, then run south to the bridge. Cross the bridge, then run southwest/south to the ferryboat; click on it and you'll arrive in Mort'ton. Run southwest then south to the bank in Burgh de Rott. To get to the vampires, run west and go over the fence and just a bit further west.
If you prefer to fight in the Haunted Woods, the best bet is to use the fairy rings to code "A L Q" -- there are quite a few vampires in that area.
You can also just run east from Mazchna (the Slayer master in Canifis) until you find the vampires. |
Equipment | Wear standard melee, ranged or magic gear as appropriate. Meleeing is better in terms of kill speed, especially since these monsters regenerate quickly when damaged.
Vampires can also be Dharoked, though their slow respawn rate means high-level players may not gain much by this.
These monsters can be effectively cannoned; I recommend doing this in the Burgh de Rott area only. |
Supplies | You should use super attack and super strength potions for faster kills. All but very high-level players should also use super defence potions.
Assuming you are banking the vampire dust (which you should, to use for Summoning or to sell for a profit), you will probably be making short trips and banking frequently; this is why I recommend the spot near Burgh de Rott.
In this case, either take 2-dose potions with you (so you can drop the empties to make room for more drops), or just swig potions in the bank and store the remainder to use on the following run (better for high-level players). |
Familiar | A beast of burden will let you carry more vampire dust and other goodies. As always, don't bother with a war tortoise as it is too expensive for the extra 6 slots it provides over a spirit terrorbird. |
Combat Notes | Vampires are pretty easy to kill, as they have a low LP count, though they can occasionally get in a few good hits. Note that very high-level players may need to use energy or super energy potions if fighting efficiently, because the vampires tend to wander.
As mentioned above, these can be cannoned fairly effectively; this has the added benefit of drawing the monsters to you so there's less chasing around required, and less chance of tapping out your run energy.
If fighting in the Haunted Woods, you'll likely have to spend some time also fighting the level 72 vampires; they spawn from the (unattackable) spiders that wander around. Try to avoid the leeches, though this can be difficult as they don’t appear on your minimap. |
Drop Notes | The main attraction here is the vampire dust, which is used in Summoning and dropped 100% of the time when killing vampires.
In addition to the dust, vampires provide a small number of herbs, herb and allotment seeds, runes and charms.
Don't bother picking up coin drops as they are only 15 gp and will slow you down; same with the earth rune drops which are only 4 at a time. |
