Phrin Shade - Access and Combat Recommendations

Access Directions

Phrin shades are found only in the shade tombs in the town of Mort'ton. The quickest way to get to the town is to use the short-cut from Canifis you learn about in the quest In Search of the Myreque. Go through the trap door south of the bar in Canifis, open the secret door to the south, then follow the tunnel to the end. Go through the doors into the swamp, then run south to the bridge. Cross the bridge, then run southwest/south to the ferryboat; click on it and you'll arrive in Mort'ton; the shade tomb is in the far north part of town.. You'll want to bank in Burgh de Rott, which is just south of Mort'ton.

To access the shade tomb to fight phrin shades you need a shade key of any sort. A quick way of getting one is to pyre some loar remains (obtained from Loar Shades); after one or two you'll get a bronze key as a reward. Go to the shade tomb and open the door; the phrin shades are right in the room where you enter.

Equipment

Melee is recommended as these cannot be safe-spotted. Very high-level players will be fine with standard melee gear; those below combat level 100 or so may wish to use Barrows armor.

Wear a Salve amulet, as it will increase accuracy and damage.

Supplies

These monsters hit harder than the level 40 Loar Shades, but still not too bad. Very high-level players can just eat small amounts of food between trips, or bring some with to use as needed. High-level and mid-level players will need more.

Super sets are recommended for all levels, to speed kills and reduce damage done.

I don't bring alching runes for these shades as most of their items are of low value.

Familiar

A beast of burden is essential for carrying extra remains, if you are collecting or pyring them. I assumed in my tests the use of a bull ant, as I figure most people pyring phrin shades would have a reasonably low Summoning level -- a higher beast is of course better.

Combat Notes

Phrin shades begin as phrin shadows, dark circles that float around on the ground. They are aggressive and will attack any player level 120 or below who comes near them. They will occasionally reduce your Strength by a few points.

If fighting the shades for combat XP or a Slayer assignment, you can kill up to 380 of them per hour, depending on your level and skill. If collecting the remains and banking them in Burgh de Rott, the kill count will of course drop drastically, due to the time needed to pick them up and bank them; again, a beast of burden is extremely useful. In my tests using a bull ant, I can kill and bank about 240 shade remains per hour. With a war tortoise, I can do more.

Unlike Loar Shades, the phrin shades are only in the shade tomb where you go to use keys. Therefore, the most sensible approach is to start with a load of remains, pyre them, take the keys to the tomb, use the keys, then kill more phrin shades and take their remains back to repeat the cycle.

In the discussion that follows, I assume you have level 40 Summoning for a bull ant familiar, which is quite useful; if you can use a higher-level beast of burden, even better. I also assume you already have some 4-dose sacred oils (bought or made at the temple) and oak logs.

To get started, go to the tomb and get 18 phrin remains (assuming you are using a bull ant); you'll need a key to start out, so pyre some loar shades as mentioned above until you get one.

Now, get out a bull ant pouch and summon it, then take out a tinderbox, 9 4-dose sacred oils and 18 oak logs. If you have a higher-level beast of burden take more; if not using a beast (or if you need slots for food) then do fewer. You can use any type of logs, but I recommend oak; they give much more Prayer XP per shade than regular logs, and they're cheap; you need level 20 Firemaking for them. You can use even higher-level logs too; you'll get more Firemaking XP, but the Prayer XP only goes up a tiny bit over oak logs, and higher-level logs cost more and also use up more sacred oil. If your Firemaking level is high you should consider burning higher-level shades instead of using higher logs with phrin remains -- that way you can get better rewards!

Use the sacred oil on the logs; 2 doses are needed per log, so you should end up with 18 oak pyre logs. Put 9 of these in the bull ant and bank the empty vials. Take out a super set, take a sip of each potion and bank the rest of the potions. Now withdraw 18 phrin remains from your bank; this should fill up your inventory.

Run north out of Burgh de Rott and veer west until you find one of the pyre areas.

Burn 9 shades using the 9 pyre logs in your inventory, then take the second set of 9 logs from the bull ant and repeat. Each time you burn a shade a reward will appear on the stand next to the pyre: a key or some gold. With phrin shades you can get either of the two highest bronze keys (black trim or purple trim) or the three lowest steel keys (red, brown or crimson trim). Coin amounts are 400-500 gp. You also get Prayer XP and Firemaking XP depending on the logs used. You only have a few seconds to grab the key or gold before it disappears, so don't be too slow! You'll usually get around 12-14 keys per 18 shades.

When done, run north to the shade tomb and open the door. If you have any bronze keys, run to the bronze doors to the east or west and open them. Then find the chests that match the colors of the keys you have. Open each chest to collect the reward inside, which can be one or more items and possibly gold as well. Be sure to click "Continue" after the initial message; sometimes you'll get a bonus of a few swamp paste (to use building the temple.)

Exit the bronze chest room, go to the center of the room you entered and head south through the steel door. Just to the east and west are rooms with steel chests, guarded by aggressive Riyl Shades; ignore them and open each chest.

Now exit the steel area and kill 18 phrin shades, picking up their remains (use the beast of burden too if you need space, and drop the tinderbox if necessary.) You can kill more shades if you want extra remains (which can be sold as well). When done, exit the tomb (no keys needed) and run to the general store. Sell any junk items that aren't worth keeping or alching (most of them) and then return to Burgh de Rott. Bank, use Unburden scrolls or energy potions to restore run energy, and repeat; it should take around 12.5 to 13 minutes total for 18.

Drop Notes

Phrin shades drop only phrin remains. These can be pyred to get fairly low-level rewards from the Shades of Mort'ton chests, mostly steel, black and mithril weapons and armor. You'll also get a few bars, some runes, a little jewelry and the occasional fine cloth.

Log Notes

Based on killing and collecting remains using a beast of burden. If killing only (not banking remains), total is about 380 kills per hour at high level.

The coin total includes gold obtained from the pyre stations and chests. Of the 85 remains pyred, I got 7 bronze key black, 6 bronze key purple, 20 steel key red, 21 steel key brown and 13 steel key crimson (18 coin drops).
