Farming Help with the Skills Necklace

Postby Stethrane » Wed Mar 05, 2008 11:30 am

I've recently had a renewed interest in farming - I have no idea why, but I just thought I'd pass along a little tip that i feel is probably under-utilized.

Image The skills necklace can be very handy for farming.

Benefits
    * Skills necklaces are rechargeable similar to glory amulets but they're even easier to charge. Just fairy to BLR and use necklaces on the totem inside the Legends Guild.

    * Skills necklaces are cheaper than glory amulets.

    * Using a rechargeable necklace makes farming cheaper. Less money spent on laws = more seed purchasing power.
Uses in Farming
*Skilling to Fishing Guild is quickest way to Ardougne allotment

*Skilling to Mining Guild is just as close to Draynor allotment as Glorying to Draynor is with the added benefit if being closer to the Falador Tree spot if you need to run there first. This advantage has been severely minimized by the release of the adventurer's ring since that is the closest, completely free teleport to the Draynor patch.

*Skilling to the Cooking Guild is a great way to Bank before heading to the Varrok Tree spot. This also puts you very close to the Varrock bush patch.

*Skilling to the Crafting Guild puts you just a bit north of the Rimmington bush patch.

Most Useful Scenario
The farming run that I do most often is a simple allotment run - no fruit or regular trees... just herbs and flowers. This can be done very cost-effectively as follows:
    Wear:
Image Skills necklace (2) or higher
Inventory:
    ImageEctophial
    ImageSeeds
    ImageAdventurer Ring (Optional)
Directions:
    1. Ecto then run west to allotment - get secateurs, seed dibber, spade and 4 super-compost.
2a. Skill necklace to Mining Guild. If yield is high or you need to check on tree in falador or you need compost material, head north. Otherwise, head south to Draynor allotment.
    OR
2b. Cabbage-port using Adventurer Ring and head north to Draynor allotment.
    3. Skill to Fishing Guild (bank if necessary) and run east to Ardougne allotment.
    4. Run north-east to Catherby.
    5. Bank and then complete the final allotment.

The necklace has alternative ways of reaching your patches no doubt there.

Use a skills necklace with Lunar Magic and Fairy Rings is also an alternate way to do a run.

A few things to point out however

1. price comparisson between glory and skills is nice, but with the ability to get assistance form a high level crafter, cost is not a factor if you have the supplies or the skill level.

2. I use up 5 laws, 2 fires, 2 waters and 5 airs on a typical 5 herb patch farming run on the normal spellbook, I make all my own Laws, element runes are easy to come by (drops)

My run looks like this

Start at Trollheim patch (2 laws + 2 fires, 1 free invy space created) and grab farmin equipment. Harvest and re-plant

Port Phasmantys is next, use ecto, run west to patch, pick and re-seed.

If 3 spaces remain use Duel ring to Al Karid, pick 3 cactus spines, otherwise tele to Seers (1 law + 5 Air, 1 free invy space created)

Arrive at Seers, Bank in Catherby, visit herb patch, plant / re-seed. Walk to Fruit Tree, pick 6 coconuts.

Tele to Draynor, Bank and walk to patch...pick / re-seed

Tele to Ardougne (2 laws + 2 water, 2 free invy spaces created), if I have not done so yet, visit Vine patch and Slay vine or check health. Bank and walk to patch.

Results:
10-15 minute run
5 herb patches covered
Cactus special covered
1 Fruit tree covered
Vine special covered.

Equipment used
5 law
2 Fire
5 Air
2 Water
5 supercompost (if vine is replanted, pay farmer, no need for supercompost)

I haven't tried your method, but isn't it faster to just run from the ardougne patch straight to the catherby patch? During my own herb/flower run I tele to camelot, go to catherby patch, bank, then go to ardougne patch carrying ectophial and wearing a glory so I can go to draynor if my ardougne yield is huge. It only costs me about 50% run energy to go from the bank in catherby to the ardougne patch and if I'm low on run energy I just withdraw an energy potion before and drink it on the run. Doesn't take long at all.

Nice idea though, and I like your use of the skills necklace although I'm not sure I'd be prepared to use another 2 bank slots for them. Have you tried wearing your ring of charos? I'm pretty sure you can get the ardougne-brimhaven boat for free (and you'd get half price on the other one) if small amounts of money are of any concern to you.

Nice! You're totally right - so no need for gloves or charos ring or coins - just made my life simpler! Updated my OP.

No doubt it can be done quicker and easier with runes. My intent here was to offer an alternative for stingy farmers (which is why I leave out the herb patch only reachable by tele) but I didn't really state that so my bad.

Thanks for posting your run - I love seeing how people farm - there's not nearly enough info out there imho...

Combat bracelet takes you right to the bush patch at Champs Guild, then a short run to the hops patch south of there.

The skills necklace to the crafting guild helps for the Rimmy bush patch too.

Higher end bushes and hops add decent experience. The barley, jute and wildblood are useful for farmer payments.

My Farming run is similar to sk3l3t0r711, but I do 5 herb patches, 1 bush, 5 fruit trees, and 5 regular trees every day. After I do those I sometimes resupply and hit the other 3 bush patches and 2 hops patches, but that adds another 20 minutes so I rarely do it anymore. After 40+ minutes of farming I am done for the day.

I could post my route and inventory if you want, but I use the law method and a total round time is 40-42 minutes for all 5 herb patches, 5 fruit trees, 5 regular trees, and 1 bush

I always start in Catherby now (thanks to the First Resort Quest) and after collecting there head to Oo'Glog for a dip in the Saltwater spring.
Cost is:
850 gold in transport to Oo’glog
12 Laws
14 Airs
7 Waters
3 Fires
1 Earth
2 Glory charges
1 Elf crystal charge
2 Dueling ring Charges

But I love your idea and Johns comments for the bush patches and might need to change my routine :)

I wish to start farming properly soon, so id like to see your run if its not too much trouble :D 40 mins a day seems to be all I could tolerate, so your method may be good for me...

Farming Help with the Skills Necklace

Obviously the farming runs will be different if you work in trees/fruit trees and other things. I try to do more than 1 flower/herb run per day and other than that only use fruit trees for powerlevelling. So I have a just herb/flower run and a fruit tree/herb/flower run worked out.

Ever tried fiting cat-selling into your farming run? It fits into my herb/flower/fruit tree run beautifully.

Farming Help with the Skills Necklace

Postby Blooblyblobl » Thu Mar 06, 2008 12:25 pm

Skills necklace is very nice, I agree.

Anyway, since I'm going for 99 farming (on hold while I'm not a member  ), I thought I'd post my route.

I farm dwarf weed, limpwurt, maple, papaya, and calquat (might switch to a lower exp but higher profit herb though)

My herb run goes: Trollheim, Port Phas (ecto), Port Sarim (glory to bank), Ardy (skills necklace), Catherby (camelot tele, if it saves time 300 gp is worth it to me).

Trees: Since maple roots aren't worth much I pay the farmer to chop my trees down for me, it saves a lot of time. Anyway, I home tele to lumbridge, then tele to falador and do the falador and taverly patches. From there, I go to al kharid, pick cactus spines, and take the glider to grand tree. I hit the grand tree patch, and if my fruit trees aren't ready I take the spirit tree to GE and hit the varrock patch.

Fruit trees: Done with trees (if they're ready). I usually start this run at the end of an herb run. I grab all the saplings, check the catherby patch, home tele, and start on the normal trees. Once I get to grand tree, I check the patch there, bank if necessary, take the spirit tree to the gnome village, and then off to GE for the last normal tree. Finally, I use a tele crystal to hit the letya patch, then tele to ardy, do the jade vine, bank, check my nature amulet to see if the calquat's ready, take the boat to ardy, check the fruit tree, and proceed to the calquat if it's ready. I usually tele to edgeville afterwards, that's my favorite access bank.

PS: The ending might change a little when I finish my spirit seeds for exp (had 11 from lots of MTK), will probably incorporate karamja patches into the spirit tree portion.

I had no idea you could even pay the farmers to cut down your tree - I do get really sick of having to drop logs... Or the worst is if you chop it down and then it grows back before you can dig it. What does it usually cost? I can't believe I didn't know about this!

200 gp each. You have to talk to the farmer to get it, the right-click "pay" option is only for watching the trees.

I didn't know about this until it was too late to be of much use to me. While I was working my farming to where I could grow mage trees, I was also working woodcutting so that I would be able to cut down my mage trees. I was afraid that I would grow them, check health, and then be stuck with them until I had the right wc level.

This bit of info ought to go in our thread about little tidbits of advice.

Farming Help with the Skills Necklace

Postby Magaoitin » Thu Mar 06, 2008 8:27 pm

Well I have a couple of odd practices for farming, but they are working for me and cost next to nothing. and this is the most efficient route I have found to date...at least for me.

1. First I typically grow only Kwuarms in 4 patches and Snapdragons in Trollheim. I have posted in other threads that at the current prices and average yields even if 3 of the kwuarms die you will break even on costs, so don’t worry about them. You will make money on these herbs. If you aren't high enough to plant these remember that you make even more money (in relation to the costs) for Toads and Avantoes.

2. Fruit trees, when my kingdom runs out (as it is now) I have bought a ton of Apple and Banana seeds. They are less than 100 gp each right now and at that price who cares if they die, plus its still modest exp each day.

3. Regular trees, well oddly enough the best value for your EXP (ratio of EXP per GP) is Oaks, then Willows, then Maples, Yews, and Magics last as these give the least exp per gp you spend, but on the flip side they are quick. Additionally Payment for oaks is a basket of tomatoes and willows are a basket of apples. I alternate between Oaks and willows and buy hundreds of them. I only plant higher when I get a good haul from the kingdom.

Oaks are almost 3 exp per gold (seed cost $162 on the GE and you get 485.5 exp for planting and checking health)
Willows 0.26 exp per gold
Maple 0.12 exp per gold
Yew 0.10 exp per gold
Magic 0.08 exp per gold

This is based on pricing from about 3 weeks ago.

My Route and inventory for daily farming runs is with a start in Catherby.

Spottier Cape, boots of lightness, Glory, Magic Secateurs, Ring of Charos
2 Kwuarm 1 snap seeds 2 marigold seeds
850 gold
Ectophile
2 laws
2 fires

1. Harvest and plant at the allotment,
2. Bank, grab an axe, apple tree seedling, and 9 sweetcorn plant at the fruit tree and bank the fruit. Run to the Charter and go to Oo’Glog.
3. Oo’Glog bank and drop the Ring of Charos and equip a dueling ring
4. Port to Trollheim – If I get a big crop, over 12 snapdragons I use the dueling ring to bank, otherwise
5. Ecto to Port Phasmatys
6. Glory to Draynor, bank and grab 2 kwuarms, 2 marigolds, 1 belledona, 6 laws and 6 waters. Run to the Allotment patch and harvest.
7. Run to the Belledona patch. I keep all these since they are an easy 500 exp each
8. Port to Ardy run to the north bank and deposit, run to the farming patch. Port back to Ardy and run to the south Bank
9. Swap magic Secatures for wc axe, grab 1 apple 9 sweetcorn, 1 banana, 1 poison ivy seed, and 30 gp
10. Boat to Brimhaven – plant the apple tree, and Port back to ardy.
11. Run south to the bush patch
12. Run to the west and down to the Fruit tree patch west of the tree gnome maze. Somewhere between the Bush patch and the Tree patch the saltwater spring wears off, but you still make it to the fruit tree
13. I plant a banana and DO NOT PAY since its 4 baskets of apples and the price of a dead banana is about 90 gp atm. At that price who cares if it lives or dies?
14. Glory to Edge and bank, grab another apple, and corn payment along with a willow and basket of apples, and a tinderbox. Drink 1 (4) dose super energy and run to the Sprit Tree at the GE
15. Use the Sprit Tree to get to Gnome Stronghold and run 1 click to the fruit tree patch and plant the apple tree, then run to the Regular tree spot and plant the willow.
16. Bank is right next door, grab 2 willows, 2 baskets of apples, Lumby Tele and Varrock Tele.
17. Port to Lumby and run to the Regular tree spot.
18. Port Varrock and plant the other willow
19. Run to the bank and grab 2 more willows, 2 baskets of apples and a Fally Port, an Elf Crystal, and a super energy if you need it.
20. Plant in the Fally tree patch
21. Run north to the Taverly Tree Patch.
22 Use the Elf Crystal to get to Llyeta bank and the final fruit tree spot – 42 minutes last night.

That covers 5 herb and allotment locations, 2 fruit trees, one Belladona, and one bush in the first 18-20 minutes (when the spring wears off)
Then the remaining 3 fruit trees and 5 regular tree spots take the next 20 minutes.

This nets me around 20k farming exp at the low end (if you have higher fruit and tree seeds its even better.) and about $143k when I sell the snaps and kwuarms at current prices. Plus if you sell Marigold you have another $15-$20k from the 4 you harvested.

At this point if you are collecting marigold seconds to use or sell make another round to the 4 allotment patches and harvest 4 maridols. By the time you are done with that you can start a second round of herbs, but I have usually had enough of farming by then.

I am trying to work in the other great suggestions here and add more bush spots to my run. Poison Ivy gives 1k exp per bush and I have not lost 1 in the last 500+ plantings and that is without paying the farmer. Just use super compost.

Thanks for the tip! This is a great way to start a farming run. From now on, when I logout, I'll make sure I am at the Oo'glog bank so I am ready to hit the salt-water pool and tele to Trollheim the next time I login!
