The picture below shows the 9 tear-collection points.
The 3 streams in the middle will be your primary positions, they are marked in green.
The other 6 points are secondary positions, from most preferable, marked in blue, to least preferable, marked in red.

The 3 streams in the middle are preferable not only because visibility is best there, but mainly because of the distance to other streams.
Some people prefer to stay in the middle at all times and wait for the streams to turn blue; imo, this is not the best way to do it.
Your position and the position of your mouse pointer are key in this minigame.
Consider the next image:

- if the red arrow is where you are then
- the yellow arrow is where your mouse pointer should be
As soon as the blue stream disappears, click your mouse. Then, proceed to the next blue stream; you don’t want to linger around waiting, go to where the nearest blue stream is.
Now consider the following image:

- if the red arrow is where you are then
- the yellow arrow is where your mouse pointer should be, or alternatively
- the green arrow is a secondary possible position for the mouse pointer.
Now look at this image:

- if the red arrow is where you are then
- the yellow arrow is where your mouse pointer should be
- the white arrow is a possible secondary position for the mouse pointer and
- the blue arrow is a position you want to avoid, unless there’s a blue stream there.
Finally:

- if the red arrow is where you are then
- the yellow arrow is where your mouse pointer should be and
- the white arrows are preferred secondary positions
As a rule of thumb, you want to remain as close as possible to the 3 middle streams, so that you are close to as many streams as possible.
Positions and movements to avoid
You should always keep your mouse one square away from your character, but as close to the streams as possible. Here are some things you should avoid; the orange squares and arrows show movements and positions you want to avoid.
Try not to back away from the streams. Your mouse pointer should not be in the following squares, marked in orange:

Another thing you should avoid is to move between streams that are opposite to each other:

You also want to avoid moving too far from where you are:

Luck is of course a very important factor. Sometimes, you simply can’t avoid some of the movements or positions above. So good luck!
I hope this little guide is of help. If anyone has anything to add or if you think I forgot something, please share it with the rest of us.

PS: the image used is not the best, but it’s the best I could capture today. I might try to get a better one next time I do tears, in four days.
PPS: you can expect to get 1 tear per 2 quest points; at 270 quest points, I consider 120 tears an acceptable result, 150 tears a good and expectable result and anything above 160 tears a very good session. My max is 174, but results of 180 or more are within the realm of possibility.
Edit:
