Comprehensive Guide to the Dagganoth Kings.

Contents:
Subsection i - Hybriding
Subsection ii - Maging
Subsection iii - Notes
Subsection iv - Drops
Subsection v - Glossary of Terms

In this guide i would like to go in depth about the techniques of killing the Dagannoth Kings. Including Hybriding, Maging, as well as in Depth Data on Prayer usage and Possible time spent using many different variables. The guide is split up into many sections, so feel free to scroll through and have a look.

    Subsection i – Hybriding

Targets: Prime & Supreme

What is hybriding the dagganoth kings? – Hybriding involves melee and range primarily. The technique is to kill both supreme and prime with melee and range respectively. Dagannoth kings is one place in Runescape where the combat triangle really pushes home, so the best technique to take them down is to find their weakness and exploit it. For Supreme, he is a ranger, so you will be using melee exclusively on him, whilst prime is a mager, therefore his weakness is to Range.

Getting there: Getting to the dag kings is quite easy, just make your way to waterbirth, have someone get you in the doors, and follow the rooms all the way to the rock lobsters. I won’t go into detail about this as it’s quite easy. The prayer pattern is: Magic, Range, Nothing, Range, Mage, Mage, Mage, Nothing, Range, Range and finally Melee. You should now be at the Rock lobsters. Once there, make sure the Mage has sufficient run energy to be able to run all the way to the ladder, then across the room. If he has to walk he may die, meaning your whole trip is ruined. Please note, Throwing axes and a small chunk of your special bar will be needed to pass the gates into the maze before the dag kings. Without the axes special, you need at least 3 people to get in, letting one in and then maging across to take down the gate.

Pre-Requisites This all depends on who you are going with. If you are going with an experienced hybrider, your levels could be as follows. This is a minimum I’d recommend.
    70 Attack
    70 Strength
    70 Defence
    70 Range
    70 Magic
    43 Prayer
Entry: Entry can be a pain if you are inexperienced. For a hybrid, you want to wait until the mage will be across the other side of the lair before entering. Once you enter, use all your specials on supreme, whilst using Magic Prayer and Piety to take him down fast. On entry, he is the one that will kill you if you get into trouble. Once he is down, leave your magic prayer on and start ranging prime. You will want to do this from the northern most point of the lair possible. This is so that if supreme spawns he will not see you. Having two kings on you at once is never a good idea. By Ranging Prime at the North you can take literally forever to kill him without any threat of being touched by the other kings.
Here is a small map off tip.it showing where each Dag King can go.

Supreme is green, Prime is red and Rex is white. For now lets concentrate on Supreme and Prime. If you are on the northernmost tip of the lair, supreme will not see you. Once you take down prime, switch on your range prayer and take out supreme. Try to kill Supreme as south as you can.. this is hard because he won’t move once you start fighting him. This is to try and keep out of primes range if he spawns.. usually you will not be out of his range. This pattern of Mage Pray + farcasting Prime and then Range pray on Supreme using melee will be the main chain of events you will try to follow whilst killing the kings. If you do anything outside of this pattern then danger may come.

This is what the lair will look like from the middle:

Take note of the minimap, you can see the ladder on the left, and the rex safespot on the far right
The Green Zone is where Supreme Wanders
The Blue Zone is where Prime Wanders
The Orange Zone is where Rex Wanders

Dangers: The biggest danger when Dking is having Prime spawn while you are taking down Supreme. Prime is the biggest threat of all the kings, as he hits 50’s, and often. If he ever pops up while you are killing supreme, be sure to put mage prayer on straight away, then flick on piety and finish off supreme. With good armor + piety and being sara brewed, supreme will not hit you much. Definitly not as dangerous as prime. The rule of thumb is, anytime Prime may attack, mage pray.
The next biggest threat is having a bad mage. The mage Is meant to grab rex when he spawns, leaving only prime and supreme for the hybriders. If somehow the mage screws up and doesn’t grab rex and he starts attacking the hybriders, immediately without hesitation run up the ladder, leaving the mage to grab rex. Then re – enter just as if you are entering for the first time. Be sure to watch Prime if he is dead, because its risky that he may spawn on you at any time. If at any time you die, ask your partner to bless your grave, then regroup at Camelot and make your way back. Be careful not to die when retrieving your gear!

Gear: Having the right gear is quite important. I’d say this would be the perfect setup.
    Verac’s Helm
    Karil’s Top
    Verac’s Skirt
    DFS
    Whip, (godsword)
    Ranger Boots
Rune X bow and Diamond Bolts
    Fury, Accumulator
    Barrows Gloves
    Ring of life

Of course, you may swap in for lesser items, it’s quite self explanatory as to what you could use if not what I suggest, (for example obby shield instead of DFS). You basically want to maximize your Range defence, with some extra Range bonus Thrown In. Prime is easily the slowest to kill. I can kill Supreme faster with 75 attack and 75 strength than what I can kill prime with 99 range. Therefore you will spent most of your time mage praying, meaning defence against range is important to not get ripped by spinylops

Food 1:1 Sara brews and Super Restores if not using healing familiar or guthans seems to work for me. Obviously with higher defence you can lower your brews down a bit. This is where each person will need to experiment to find what’s best for themselves. If using a healing familiar, tone down your brews even more. This is trial and error to find the perfect setup. Also bring 3 Antipoison+, a house teletab and a DDS and RuneXbow in your inventory. A house teletab is almost critical, as if you die in your house no danger can come of you. Sometimes if a ring of life teleports you and you are poisoned, you can die pretty soon after arriving. If you are in your house there is no danger of loosing items or having to reapir barrows items you drop on death!

Summons There are many summons you could use, and im not going to go into detail here, because if you have the level for a certain summon you will most likely know whether it is useful or not. Personally, I take two tortoise, and then a bunyip for after the second one runs out. Obviously pack yacks, titans and unicorns would prove excellent at the dag kings. The Fruit bat can provide some excellent healing, as will the bunyip and unicorn. To sort the summons say:
High Level: Two Pack Yacks, Two or Three Unicorn (depending on time you can last)
Mid level: Two Tortoise, Two Bunyip or Fruit Bats
Low Level: Spirit Terrorbird and One Void Spinner
The mid and high level players should last for two of their burden pouches, but a lower levelled player will struggle to last mor ethan one Bird Pouch and a spinner. What you bring really depends on experience at Dag Kings and personal preferance. High summoning is a massive advantage at Dag Kings.

Leaving: You will either have to leave because of three different situations. The first one is you run out of pots.. meaning you must leave because you cannot stay any longer. The second situation is if someone dies, you may want to leave to help them re enter. The last reason to leave is if the mage leaves. It is very unlikely hybriders will ever outlast mages, but if you manage to you must leave, as there will be no one there to keep rex off you.

    Subsection ii - Maging

Target: Rex

Image
Image: runescape.com

Intro: Maging the dagganoth kings is possibly one of the most profitable things to do in Runescape, Besides God Wars. You can reel in alot of money here in a short time, while being relaxed and watching movies or browsing forums :D
The main method here is to Max your range defence, which maximises the time you can stay down maging rex. I can last around two hours with 75 Defence, full Guthans and a void spinner. I havn't tested it now i'm 85 Defence and 68 Summoning, but i would estimate i could stay 2 and a half to 3 hours.

Getting There: As a mage, follow the same setup as the Hybrids getting there. Once there, you are the first in. You want to Go down the ladder using protect from magic and piety (or steel skin), and run across the lair as fast as possible. Chug down brews if neccesary. Once 3/4 of the way across, Shoot Rex with your magic spell, and keep sprinting. Once over the other side, Pm the Hybrid or fake hybrid (suicider) to enter and get prime and supreme off of you. Now you can safely Kill rex from one of the many safespots for the rest of the trip. Once here, be careful not to wander insofar as to get Prime on you. If so, you will have to either a) Log out or b) stay with Mage Pray on Constantly, this can be a pain if no spinylops are attacking you.. as you will be wasting your prayer. If you get Supreme on you from a bad pull and massive bad luck, teleport. You have no hope of surviving long with Supreme on you.

Entry without suicider: Yes, it is possible to enter and safespot rex without having a suicider! This method is preferable if using a SGS.. guthan's works too but not as good. Firstly, get to the ladder, flick on protect from Magic and piety, go down and whack supreme around for a bit, healing off the SGS spec when your hp lowers. Once Supreme dies, You only have Prime and Rex Left. Now, quickly run up the ladder, this will get Prime off you. Now you can go back down, and carefully sneak around the bottom edge, just go south all the way along then east, into the normal Rex Safespot. Now you can just wait for rex to wander near and grab him with your spell :D This also works without the SGS, but you will need to use guthan's OR bring a melee weapon to do it, most likely a whip or a dds. If this is done right, you should use hardly any hp to kill Supreme

Setting Up: The "perfect" setup, and one for which you should strive for would be:
    Full Guthan's (spear incl.)
    Void Mace and DFS
    Saradomin Godsword
    Guthix Cape & Void Mace
    Infinity Boots
    Barrows Gloves
    Ring of Wealth
    Amulet Of Fury
Unicorn Stallion, Fruit bat or Bunyip
This provides three great healing abilities. The Fruit bat would be preferable, the potential food given by this is amazing. If you are not into micromanaging and fiddling around, the Unicorn may be the one for you. The Guthan's and Saradomin Godsword allow you in conjuction to heal faster than you can take damage, even without using protect from Magic prayer. It is possible to stay at Rex with the best possible setup, nearly 6 hours. A 6 Hour trip should net you 10-13mil of drops, meaning there is big profit to be had from higher levelled people with the right gear. Magic offence does not matter as much as range defence. Rex has abysmal Mage Defence, and nearly any spell will hit him at any level with any gear.

Technique: The basic technique is to Mage Rex, then heal of Spinylops until rex spawns again. You simply rinse and repeat until you have made enough money or you run out of supplies :D Heal of guthans and SGS Special when rex is down, increasing your Hp and Prayer. When you see rex spawn, pick your time to attack wisely. You should wait until rex wanders close and then grab him with your mage. Be careful to click to run back as soon as you shoot, so you don't get pulled into the middle of the arena from the limited mage attack distance. Now you must wait next to the water, on the eastern most point of the lair, until rex is close to you, but not too close to attack. As soon as he gets near run south and he will get stuck on the rim. Continue to mage him until he dies, healing and restoring prayer as neccesary. The south maging spot is preferable over the north because of the less danger present here, as in the north spot a wrong step and you could find Prime on you!
If prime isn't on you when luring, you can flick on protect from melee when rex gets close. Be sure to turn this off asap as you will not be protected from either of the Spinylops.

This is a graphical form of how to lure rex. Note the Minimap location of where we are in the lair:
The White Area is Danger zone, if you venture here you will be seen by the other kings
The Orange Area is where to wait for rex if not healing with Guthan's. Once you shoot Rex, run back to:
The Red Area is where you wait for rex to walk close, once he is in range run to:
The Blue Area is where to stand to Safespot Rex. Take note of the jut on the island, it shows the Eastern most point. this is my reference when finding the safespot.

Prayer
Prayer is the most important thing for dagganoth kings, and here i'd like to go into detail about why it is so important! The SGS is also important, lets consider three scenarios, someone not using SGS, a medium level person using SGS and a high level person using an SGS. Lets assume, a medium level person averages a hit of 15 with the special, whilst a high level person averages a hit of 25.

Now say: For each level, we can calculate the minutes prayer will last for assuming prayer is used 90% of the time, using a +5 prayer bonus. We can also conclude the times stayed for a medium level person using an sgs and a high level person using an sgs.

    Minutes Lasted Corresponding to Level

Level: 96 …. no sgs: 225.96 med lvl sgs: 247.04 high lvl sgs: 257.59
Level: 97 …. no sgs: 226.03 med lvl sgs: 247.13 high lvl sgs: 257.68
Level: 98 …. no sgs: 226.11 med lvl sgs: 247.21 high lvl sgs: 257.76
Level: 99 …. no sgs: 226.18 med lvl sgs: 247.29 high lvl sgs: 257.85

As you can see, a high level person with 99 prayer will have the potential to last for 226 minutes, using 18 Super Restores, whilst a player with 43 Prayer will be able to stay for 126 minutes with 18 Super Restores. As you can see, higher prayer is a massive advantage, giving an extra 100 minutes of Prayer alone, with level being the only factor considered. Sara Godsword will also extend your trip, providing an extra 30 minutes of prayer at level 99 Prayer, with high combat stats.

How do i get my numbers?: What i took into account here was, 18 Super Restores being used, with Prayer being drained at 4.1 Seconds per point (proof) using a +11 Prayer Bonus. I also took into account the amount of time extra by having your prayer level, for example 99 Prayer will provide an extra 5.7minutes, whilst 43 prayer will only last 2.5 Minutes. Another thing i considered was the amount of Prayer restored at each level, for example a super restore replenishes 32 Points at level 99, but at level 43 only 18 points per dose will be replenished. I assumed all 18 Potions were 4 Dose. I also assumed prayer would be used 90% of the time. This number would be alot less if using Guthans, SGS and A Healing Familiar. One thing not taken into account is the Spinylops attack which apparently drains prayer. I havn't measured this yet, and it is impossible to predict the rate at which they attack.

Prayer Rate Table:

lvl........ppot...s'rest
1-3..........7...... 8
4-7..........8...... 9
8-11 ........9 ......10
12-15 ......10...... 11
16-19 ......11 ......12
20-23 ......12 ......13
24-27 ......13 ......14
28-31 ......14 ......15
32-35 ......15 ......16

40-43 ......17 ...... 18
44-47 ......18....... 19
48-51 ......19 ...... 20

Healing
So we have established that Prayer is important, but what about HP? With 0 Hp you will most certainly die! The healing familiar that comes to mind when talking about Hitpoints healed is Bunyip. If you are a high level using SGS you will have 834 HP healed in the Time you can stay with the SGS Prayer + Super Restores, as we established this above. Therefore, if using a bunyip also, you can also heal a further 3300 HP for the full time you are there. Which is a huge increase over not using a familiar at all! A Typical inventory with healing familiars you will need 0-2 brews if you are experienced at maging, whilst a beginner may want to start with around 1.1:1 Restores to Brews, Meaning 11 Super Restores per 10 Brews. This is without a healing familiar or guthan's.

Image
Should i use the SGS?: So, after this conclusion is the SGS worth the inventory space? Simply, YES! For a level 99 Prayer with high stats, a SGS will provide 417 Points of prayer for a trip! That is equivilent to 3.2 Super Restore (4). It will also Provide a whooping 834 Hitpoints, which is equal to 38 Sharks, or 14 Saradomin Brews! Therefore, in one inventory space, you are getting 417 Prayer points, and 834 Hp Healed, or 3.2 Super Restore (4) and 14 Saradomin Brews (4). IMO The SGS Is Definitly worth it

    Subsection iv – Drops

The good part! Hopefully everyone that reads this guide will achieve some Dagannoth King Specific drops during their stay. The whole point of coming is to make some money, so it would be silly to overlook the Drops! Each King has a specific set of drops, as well as all sharing the ability to drop the Dragon Axe, the best woodcutting axe available in Runescape. A Good Trip here can net you a very decent profit indeed, each king dropping some very valuable items:

Rex:

No he hasn't. The areas are slightly inaccurate, but the general areas are right.

Started 99 magic goal on 2nd July 2008, with 85 mage and 3,569,067 XP. Goal achieved on 20th March 2010.

Currently semi-retired from Runescape as of 9th July 2009, but returning to get 70 dungeoneering and possibly complete a few other goals. I may or may not stay after that.

I don't think he can overlap the areas.

Just a small query, what about the Elemental Titans healing effect?

At times (specially when maging), you may be full hp so each Bunyip heal is actually wasted. Also, if by chance you get to low hp, you are forced to brew. Titans give you hp when you need it, with upto 24 hp per 3 scrolls, not to mention the very handy defence boost. They also let your hp go 8 points above your current one which is useful when you are going to lure rex.

Thanks..

Does anyone here know of a method for a single player to sneak past prime and supreme?

There are a couple of ways you can do it. If you got really lucky (which would require wasting loads of supplies) you probably could get in without either seeing you. That isn't a good route though.

You can however, get in with only one seeing you without that much difficulty. With the option to have either Prime or Supreme on you, Prime is the best option because he can be killed without Supreme being near. Thus, when you enter, you want to head north around the perimeter and then either keep prime on you or range him to death.

A final option (and one that imo is the most simplistic and fun) is to begin by killing Supreme when you enter, while praying mage. Then, go kill Rex (alternatively, you can range Prime and then kill Rex).

Edit: Just realized I was beaten to it.

Nice work on the guide.

One dose of super restore can counteract 3 doses of SB for higher levels, not just 2.

It's farily rare you will need to drink 3 doses of SB at dag kings if maging..
